Liberty Classic
The Liberty Classic was an annual women's bicycle race held from 1994 to 2012, simultaneously with the Philadelphia International Championship. The 57.6 mile race consisted of four laps of a 14.4 mile circuit through Philadelphia with 5 climbs up the famous Manayunk Wall. It was part of the UCI Women's Road World Cup until 2001. From 2002, it was an Elite Women's Category 1 event under UCI race classifications. The Liberty Classic was the final leg of the inaugural 2006 Commerce Bank Triple Crown of Cycling for women. The Triple Crown was a one-week, 3-race circuit, with the three races taking place in the Eastern Pennsylvania cities of Allentown, Reading and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Robin Morton (cycling)
Robin Morton is an American former cycling team manager and was the first and only female manager in men's professional cycling. She also created the first Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) registered American professional road racing team in 1984. Cycling in Europe is a traditionally male sport and includes rules prohibiting women from the race caravans. At managers' meetings prior to races in Europe, the race organization would vote on whether Morton would be allowed to ride in the team car. Morton was elected to the United States Bicycling Hall of Fame in 2016. In 2011 CyclingNews acknowledged Robin as one of the five most influential women in the sport of cycling. Hanka Kupfernagel (born 19 March 1974 in Gera, Bezirk Gera) is a retired Germany, German professional cycle racer. During most of her career her primary focus was cyclo-cross racing, however, she has also won major road, track and mountain bike races. She has won seven consecutive medals at the UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships, Women, UCI Women's Cyclo-cross World Championships, including three gold medals for 2000, 2001 and 2005; two silver medals in 2002 and 2003; and the bronze medal in 2004. Her major career victories also include a gold medal in the individual time trial competition at the 2007 UCI Road World Championships in Stuttgart and a silver medal in the road race at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. Karen Dunne (born December 30, 1967, in Detroit, Michigan) is a retired female professional cyclist from the United States. She is best known for winning the gold medal at the women's individual road race at the 1999 Pan American Games in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Diana Žiliūtė (; born 28 May 1976 in Rietavas) is a Lithuanian racing cyclist who dominated women's road racing in the late 1990s. She made her debut in the pro cycling ranks in the mid-1990s after winning the 1994 World Junior Road Race Championship. She rose to the top of women's cycling in 1998 when she won two UCI Women's Road World Cup, World Road Cup races, the overall World Road Cup title, and capped the season by winning the World Championship of Road Cycling (women), World Road Race Championships and leading the UCI Women's Road World Rankings. The following year (1999), she further demonstrated her all around prowess by winning the Grande Boucle, one of the hardest stage races in women's cycle racing history. Karen Brems Kurreck (born June 13, 1962 in Urbana, Illinois) is a graduate of Urbana High School and the University of Illinois. As a racing cyclist, she is best known for winning the inaugural women's individual time trial at the 1994 UCI Road World Championships in Catania, Italy. Kurreck represented the United States at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia. Prior to her cycling career, Brems was a collegiate gymnast at the University of Illinois where in 1984 she became the first Illini athlete to be named as the school’s Athlete of the Year and the Big Ten Conference Medal of Honor Award winner in the same season. Rasa Polikevičiūtė (born September 25, 1970 in Panevėžys) is a Lithuanian cycle racer. One of her Lithuanian cycling contemporaries is her identical twin, Jolanta Polikevičiūtė. She began cycling at age 13 under the influence of her childhood athletic coach and made her professional debut in 1990.
