''Legend Quest'' (known as ''Leyendas'' in Latin America) is an animated horror-comedy film franchise created by Ricardo Arnaiz and produced by Mexican animation studio Ánima Estudios. It is loosely based on The Reluctant Dragon by Kenneth Grahame. It consists of six films, a digital television series, and a mobile game. It centers on Leo San Juan, a heroic preteen boy who can communicate with ghosts and monsters; Teodora, a sassy preteen ghost girl with a know-it-all personality; Don Andrés, an amicable but loony old knight; Alebrije, a mild-mannered mythological creature; and Finado and Moribunda, two silent calavera children. Set in the early nineteenth century, each of the films is based upon a different Mexican legend. ''Legend Quest'' (released in Latin America as ''Las Leyendas'') is a Mexican animated fantasy comedy-horror streaming television series created for Netflix produced by Ánima Estudios. It is based on the characters created by Mexican animator Ricardo Arnaiz, and is part of the '' Leyendas'' animated franchise. This is the streaming network's first original animated series produced in Latin America. It premiered worldwide on Netflix on February 24, 2017. The series was renewed for a second season which premiered on October 5, 2019, titled ''Legend Quest: Masters of Myth.'' In 2019, CAKE picked up the distribution rights for the series. Alebrijes () are brightly colored Mexican folk art sculptures of fantastical (fantasy/mythical) creatures. Description The monos de madera or alebrijes as they are called in Spanish were originally created by carver Manuel Jimenez but soon became so popular that other people from his town and a few other communities in Oaxaca began carving to have an extra income. The first alebrijes, along with the invention of the term, originated with Mexico City '' cartonero'' Pedro Linares. Linares often told that in 1943, he fell very ill.
