Lesaffre is a French yeast manufacturer, and the world's largest producer. History The company was founded by Louis Lesaffre, the co-founder of Bonduelle, in the mid-19th century. Red Star Yeast Company, LLC is a joint-venture of Lesaffre, and Archer Daniels Midland Company. Red Star operates two plants in the United States—a plant in Headland, AL, and a new plant built in 2006 in Cedar Rapids, IA. Lesaffre Yeast Corporation (prior to the joint-venture) used to operate plants in Milwaukee, WI; Baltimore, MD; and Oakland, CA, but those facilities have been closed since 2006. Their corporate office is located in Milwaukee, WI. Red Star Yeast and Products was the former division of Sensient Technologies (formerly Universal Foods), which distributed the Red Star brand. Bonduelle is a French company producing processed vegetables. History * The company was founded in 1853, when Louis Bonduelle-Dalle (23 October 1802 - 13 November 1880) and Louis Lesaffre-Roussel (1802–1869) established a grain and juniper berry distillery in Marquette-lez-Lille. On June 17, 1862, they expanded to a farm in Renescure, which they turned into a grain alcohol distillery. * 1901 the company and its seven production sites were divided into three family owned companies: Bonduelle, Lesaffre and Lemaître. * 1926 the business began canning peas. Eckhard Boles (born September 4, 1963 in Altena) is a German microbiologist and biotechnologist. Since 2003 he is professor of microbiology at the Goethe University Frankfurt with a focus on the physiology and genetics of lower eukaryotes. He works mainly on the optimization of yeasts for industrial biotechnology.
