Les Deux Aveugles
''Les deux aveugles'' (, ''The Two Blind Men'' or ''The Blind Beggars'') is an 1855 one-act French ''bouffonerie musicale'' (operetta) by Jacques Offenbach.Lamb 1992, p. 1143. The libretto was written by Jules Moinaux and was a condensation of his 3-act ''Les musiciens ambulants''. The half-hour long piece is a comic sketch about two (supposedly) blind beggars, consisting of an overture and four numbers. Offenbach was bold in making light of the disabled poor, but he believed that his patrons would see the humour of the piece. Most Parisians had been pestered by beggars on Parisian street corners, and Offenbach's blind beggars were con men, rather than deserving outcasts of society. The little piece was an instant hit, praised for its catchy dance tunes, and it soon spread Offenbach's name and music around the world. Karl Treumann
Matthias Karl Ludwig Treumann (27 July 1823 – 18 April 1877) was an Austrian actor, operetta singer (tenor), theatre director and writer. Life After an apprenticeship as a printer in his native Hamburg in 1841, he went to the in Pest, where his brothers were already active. In order to avoid conscription for military service in Hamburg, he joined a touring theatre troupe in Transylvania. From 1843 to 1845 he worked again in Pest. 1847 he was engaged on the recommendation of Franz von Suppé for the Theater an der Wien. In 1852 he moved to the Carltheater in Vienna, which was under the direction of Carl Carl, where he appeared with Johann Nestroy and Wenzel Scholz. At first Nestroy was displeased by the engagement of Treumann, because he saw his position endangered by him. But soon there was an excellent understanding between Nestroy, Treumann and Scholz. Harry Rickards
Harry Rickards (4 December 1843 – 13 October 1911), born Henry Benjamin Leete, was an English-born baritone, comedian and theatre owner, most active in vaudeville and stage, first in his native England and then Australia after emigrating in 1871. Early life Rickards was born in Stratford, London, England, the son of Benjamin Halls Leete, a printer and later chief engineer of the Egyptian railways and his wife Mary (née Watkins) Harry was also intended to be an engineer. He had been forbidden during his apprenticeship to attend theatres by his Puritan parents. He married Caroline Hayden on 10 March 1862 at Bromley. Fred Sullivan
Frederic Sullivan ( – ) was an English people, English actor and singer. He is best remembered as the creator of the role of the Learned Judge in Gilbert and Sullivan's ''Trial by Jury'', providing a model for the comic roles in the later Savoy Operas composed by his brother Arthur Sullivan. By 1870, Sullivan had abandoned architecture for a career on stage. In 1871, he first performed the role of Mr. Cox in a revival of his brother's first comic opera, ''Cox and Box'', and later that year created the role of Apollo in the first Gilbert and Sullivan opera, ''Thespis (opera), Thespis''. Gaiety Theatre, London
The Gaiety Theatre was a West End theatre in London, located on Aldwych at the eastern end of the Strand. The theatre was first established as the Strand Musick Hall in 1864 on the former site of the Lyceum Theatre. In 1868, it became known as the Gaiety Theatre and was, at first, known for music hall and then for musical burlesque, pantomime and operetta performances. From 1868 to the 1890s, it had a major influence on the development of modern musical comedy. Under the management of John Hollingshead until 1886, the theatre had early success with ''Robert the Devil'', by W. S. Gilbert, followed by many other burlesques of operas and literary works. The Royal Gallery of Illustration was a 19th-century performance venue located at 14 Regent Street in London. It was in use between 1850 and 1873. The gallery was built in the 1820s by the architect John Nash (architect), John Nash as part of his own house, to display his considerable collection of paintings.
