Lemuel E. Prowse
Lemuel Ezra Prowse (February 2, 1858 – December 17, 1925) was a merchant and political figure in Prince Edward Island. He represented 5th Queens in the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island from 1893 to 1900 as a Liberal member and represented Queen's in the House of Commons of Canada from 1908 to 1911 as a Liberal. He was born in Charlottetown Charlottetown is the capital and largest city of the Canadian province of Prince Edward Island, and the county seat of Queens County. 5th Queens
5th Queens was an electoral district in the Canadian province of Prince Edward Island, which elected two members to the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island from 1873 to 1993. The district was also known as Charlottetown Common until 1939. Until 1966, the district comprised the entire city of Charlottetown. For that year's provincial election, the district was split, and 5th Queens comprised the eastern half of the city for the remainder of its existence. The western half of Charlottetown became the new district of 6th Queens. The Prince Edward Island Liberal Party (officially the ''Prince Edward Island Liberal Association'') is a political party in the province of Prince Edward Island, Canada. The PEI Liberals are affiliated with the federal Liberal Party of Canada. History The party was created when PEI was a British colony by reformers who agitated for the system of responsible government. This was granted by the British crown to the colony in 1851. George Coles was its dominant figure in its first decades. While initially supportive of Canadian Confederation, Coles and the Liberals soured on the project, and it was not until 1873 that the island joined Canada as a means of relieving the PEI government's severe debts. Queen's (Prince Edward Island Federal Electoral District)
Queen's was a federal electoral district in Prince Edward Island, Canada, that was represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1904 to 1968. History This riding was created in 1903 from parts of East Prince, East Queen's and West Queen's ridings. It was abolished in 1966 when it was redistributed into Cardigan, Hillsborough and Malpeque ridings, to take effect at the time of the next election (which took place in 1968). It consisted of the County of Queen's and elected two members. In 1914, it was redefined to elect only one member unless the British North America Act, 1867, were amended to entitle the province of Prince Edward Island to four members. When that happened, before the next election, Queen's again was entitled to elect two members. It continued to have two members until it was abolished in 1966. Charlottetown is the capital and largest city of the Canadian province of Prince Edward Island, and the county seat of Queens County. Named after Queen Charlotte, Charlottetown was an unincorporated town until it was incorporated as a city in 1855. It was the site of the famous Charlottetown Conference in 1864, the first gathering of Canadian and Maritime statesmen to discuss the proposed Maritime Union. Thomas William Lemuel Prowse (August 31, 1888 – November 2, 1973) was a businessman and was the 17th Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward Island from 1950 to 1958. The son of Lemuel Ezra Prowse and Frances J. Stanley, he was born and educated in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. He was proprietor and president of Prowse Brothers Ltd. in Charlottetown. Active in local politics, he was a councillor on Charlottetown City Council for eight years and served as the 26th mayor from 1930 to 1932. Benjamin Charles Prowse
Benjamin Charles Prowse (10 December 1862 – 22 February 1930) was a Canadian merchant and politician. He was born near Charlottetown, the son of William Prowse and attended public school there. He worked as a clerk for a dry goods firm there before finding work in his brother Lemuel's clothing store. By 1886, Prowse had become junior partner in his brother's firm. He married Amanda Maud Millner in 1886. Prowse served on the Charlottetown council from 1904 to 1908 and was the 15th mayor from 1908 to 1910. He served in the local militia from 1878 to 1896. He became president of the Prowse Brothers firm in 1925 after his brother's death. Prowse also helped establish Carter and Company Limited and served as its president. In 1911, he was summoned to the Senate of Canada on the advice of Wilfrid Laurier representing the senatorial division of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.
