Lange Voorhout
The Lange Voorhout () is a street in the The Hague Center#Oude Centrum, old city centre of The Hague, Netherlands. It is L-shaped and runs from Kneuterdijk in the west to Toernooiveld in the east, reaching approximately in length. History In the Middle Ages, the Lange Voorhout was bordered by several farms. Only in the 14th and 15th centuries, when the Count of Holland, Counts of Holland modernised the governance of the county with new administrative divisions, were houses built in this area. The Lange Voorhout and surroundings pre-eminently became the neighbourhood where courtiers and later statesmen came to live. Between 1350 and 1450, the first town castles of nobles, houses of ducal staff, the Predikherenklooster and residences for high magistrates appeared here. Lange Voorhout Palace ( nl, Paleis Lange Voorhout ) in The Hague was designed in 1760 by the architect Pieter de Swart for Anthony Patras (1718-1764), a deputy to the States General of the Netherlands. History Patras, born in Grenoble, Isère, France, was a nephew of governor Abraham Patras. In 1729 and under the advice of his uncle, Abraham Patras, Anthony was sent to Geneva to study. He left Geneva for Amsterdam in December 1733. In 1734 Anthony arrived in Batavia in the Dutch East Indies. When his uncle, the governor, died in 1737 the young man inherited his immense fortune, the collection of books, and art. In 1738 he married a daughter of Isaac van Schinne, member of the Council of India. After the 1740 Batavia massacre he returned to the Dutch Republic. Saur (restaurant)
Saur was a restaurant in The Hague, in the Netherlands. It was a fine dining restaurant that was awarded one Michelin star in both 1958 and 1959. It was again awarded a Michelin star in 1967 and retained that rating until 1989. The restaurant finally closed down in November 2013. In the period 1982–1984, head chef was Ad van Wel. Restaurant Saur was convicted of breaching the price regulations in 1942. During the wintertime it had charged ƒ 2,50 for a plate of pea soup, while it was only allowed to charge ƒ 1,20. Although it was moved to a higher price class before the conviction, it still had to pay a fine of ƒ 1000 (thousand guilders). In the last days of his life, 2 May 2002, politician Pim Fortuyn was dining with friends in ''Restaurant Saur''. A large crowd of protesters gathered in front of the restaurant. Pulchri Studio (Latin:"For the study of beauty") is a Dutch art society, art institution and art studio based in The Hague ('s-Gravenhage), Netherlands. This institute began in 1847 at the home of painter Lambertus Hardenberg. Since 1893 the club has its residence in the villa at Lange Voorhout in The Hague.
