The Lancastrian and Cumbrian Volunteers was a Territorial Army unit of the British Army. It was formed on 1 July 1999 following the Strategic Defence Review by the amalgamation of the 4th (Volunteer) Battalion, Queen's Lancashire Regiment and the 4th (Volunteer) Battalion, King's Own Royal Border Regiment. On 1 July 2006, the regiment was re-designated as the 4th Battalion, Duke of Lancaster's Regiment (King's, Lancashire and Border). Infantry Of The Line
Line infantry was the type of infantry that composed the basis of European land armies from the late 17th century to the mid-19th century. Maurice of Nassau and Gustavus Adolphus are generally regarded as its pioneers, while Henri de la Tour d'Auvergne, Vicomte de Turenne, Turenne and Raimondo Montecuccoli, Montecuccoli are closely associated with the post-1648 development of linear infantry tactics. Duke Of Lancaster's Regiment
The Duke of Lancaster's Regiment (King's, Lancashire and Border) (LANCS) is an infantry regiment of the line within the British Army, part of the King's Division. Headquartered in Preston, it recruits throughout the North West of England. The Duke of Lancaster is a title inherent in the Sovereign (like the titles Duke of Normandy and Lord of the Isle of Man) and as such does not vary with the Sovereign's gender. The Duke of Lancaster's Regiment is the county regiment for Cumbria, Lancashire, Greater Manchester, Merseyside and the Isle of Man, and as such, recruits mainly from these areas. Warrington () is a town and unparished area in the borough of the same name in the ceremonial county of Cheshire, England, on the banks of the River Mersey. Peninsula Barracks is a military installation on O'Leary Street in Warrington, England. History The barracks were built in the Fortress Gothic Revival Style and, although construction started a few years earlier, they were opened as Orford Barracks in 1878. Their creation took place as part of the Cardwell Reforms which encouraged the localisation of British military forces. The barracks were intended as depot for the two battalions of the 8th (The King's) Regiment of Foot. Under the Childers Reforms, the 8th Regiment of Foot evolved to become the King's Regiment (Liverpool) with its depot at the barracks in 1881. The barracks were also intended as depot for the 40th (2nd Somersetshire) Regiment and the 82nd Regiment of Foot (Prince of Wales's Volunteers). Ardwick Green Barracks
Ardwick Green Barracks is a former military installation in Ardwick, Manchester. History The barracks were designed by Lawrence Booth as the headquarters of the 5th (Ardwick) Volunteer Battalion, The Manchester Regiment; they were completed in 1886 and opened by Prince George, Duke of Cambridge, Commander-in-Chief of the Forces in September 1887. The 5th (Ardwick) Volunteer Battalion evolved to become the 8th battalion the Manchester Regiment in 1908. The battalion was mobilised at the drill hall in August 1914 before being deployed to Gallipoli and ultimately to the Western Front. During the Second World War, the barracks were used a detention centre for deserters. After the War the barracks were restored to use as the headquarters of 8th battalion of the Manchester Regiment.
