Palmerston is a planned satellite city of Darwin, the capital and largest city in Australia's Northern Territory. The city is situated approximately 20 kilometres from Darwin and 10 kilometres from Howard Springs and the surrounding rural areas. Goyder is an electoral division of the Legislative Assembly in Australia's Northern Territory. It was first created in 1990, and is named after George Goyder, the South Australian surveyor responsible for carrying out the first freehold surveys in the area. Goyder encompasses large rural areas south of Darwin, covering 9,770 km², and taking in the towns of Bees Creek, Cox Peninsula, Virginia, Marlows Lagoon and parts of Berry Springs and Humpty Doo. When first created, it was even larger extending south to Pine Creek and east to Jabiru and the whole of Kakadu National Park. There were 5,583 people enrolled in the electorate as of August 2020. The locality consists of land bounded to the east by the Adelaide River and in part to the north by the Clarence Strait. This locality is named after Koolpinyah Station, a pastoral lease established on land now partly included in the locality in 1908 by Evan and Oscar Herbert, the sons of Charles Edward Herbert, a judge, a politician and a former Government Resident of the Northern Territory. The name is ultimately derived from "Gulpinyah", the aboriginal name for a waterhole located near the station’s homestead. Its boundaries and name were gazetted on 4 April 2007.
