Lake Superior Zoo
The Lake Superior Zoo, previously known as the Duluth Zoo, is an Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) accredited zoo in Duluth, Minnesota. Founding The Lake Superior Zoo was founded in 1923 by a West Duluth businessman, Bert Onsgard, when he built a pen for his white-tailed deer "Billy". This helped his vision spread through the community, who in turn helped him build the zoo. The Pittsburgh Steel Company donated a rail car of fencing, people donated exotic pets, and school children raised money to buy two lion cubs. A bridge was built over Kingsbury Creek, which runs through the zoo. The zoo went through some difficult years during the Great Depression but eventually managed to build an elephant house. After some very successful years it acquired more animals native to the area. Collection Bessie, the elephant, was one of the zoo's first star attractions. Duluth Transit Authority
The Duluth Transit Authority (DTA) is the transit agency that provides mass transit service — currently, only buses — in the city of Duluth, Minnesota, United States. The agency also serves nearby Proctor, Minnesota, and Superior, Wisconsin, as well as the eastern edge of Hermantown, Minnesota. The organization was formed in 1969 by the Minnesota State Legislature. In 2009, the DTA was named Transit System of the Year by the Minnesota Public Transit Association. Operation Express service is provided during rush hours to New Duluth (2X), Proctor (3X), Lakeside (7X – PM only), Superior (16X – PM only), and Hermantown (20X). During peak hours, an average of 45 buses will be in service at any one time. The transit agency also owns three park-and-ride lots and has bike racks on the front of every bus.
