Lafayette Memorial
The Lafayette Memorial is a public memorial located in Brooklyn's Prospect Park (Brooklyn), Prospect Park in New York City. The memorial, designed by sculptor Daniel Chester French and architect Henry Bacon, was dedicated in 1917 and consists of a bas-relief of Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette alongside a Groom (profession), groom (speculated by some historians to be James Armistead Lafayette) and a horse. History The memorial has its origins in the Will and testament, will of Henry Harteau, a notable citizen of Brooklyn who died in 1895. Harteau had served in numerous government positions in the city throughout his life, including as a parks commissioner under Mayor of Brooklyn, Brooklyn Mayor Daniel D. Whitney. Daniel Chester French
Daniel Chester French (April 20, 1850 – October 7, 1931) was an American sculptor of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, best known for his 1874 sculpture ''The Minute Man'' in Concord, Massachusetts, and his 1920 monumental statue of Abraham Lincoln in the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. Family French was the son of Anne Richardson (1811–1856), daughter of William Merchant Richardson (1774–1838), chief justice of New Hampshire; and of Henry Flagg French (1813–1885). His siblings were Henriette Van Mater French Hollis (1839–1911), Sarah Flagg French Bartlett (1846–1883), and William M.R. French (1843–1914). He was the uncle of Senator Henry F. Hollis. Marshal of France (french: Maréchal de France, plural ') is a French military distinction, rather than a military rank, that is awarded to generals for exceptional achievements. Jean-Baptiste Le Paon (1736/1738 - 1785) was a French painter and onetime military man known for his works depicting military battle scenes. Through his uncle he was able to study under the Venetian painter of battle scenes Francesco Casanova. He later became the principal painter to the war hero Louis Joseph, Prince of Condé and adorned the Palais Bourbon which the royal had purchased with battle scenes.
