Loyal Lusitanian Legion
The Loyal Lusitanian Legion (LLL) was a foreign volunteer corps of the British Army, organized with Portuguese émigrés in England, that fought in the Peninsular War. The LLL was created by the initiative of Portuguese Army Colonels José Maria Moura and Carlos Frederico Lecor – exiled in England after the occupation of Portugal by the Napoleonic Army – and the Portuguese Ambassador in London Chevalier de Sousa, with the support of the British government. The LLL received the title "Loyal" to distinguish itself from the much larger Portuguese Legion, mobilized at the same time with the best units and officers of the disbanded Portuguese Army by direct order of Napoleon and which would fight for him in the several European campaigns. The LLL included not only Portuguese, but also British (including its commanding officer, Colonel Robert Wilson) and Germans. The Legion was organized in Plymouth, in July 1808 and landed in Oporto, Portugal in September of the same year. ...

Lovász Local Lemma
In probability theory, if a large number of events are all independent of one another and each has probability less than 1, then there is a positive (possibly small) probability that none of the events will occur. The Lovász local lemma allows one to relax the independence condition slightly: As long as the events are "mostly" independent from one another and aren't individually too likely, then there will still be a positive probability that none of them occurs. It is most commonly used in the probabilistic method, in particular to give existence proofs. There are several different versions of the lemma. The simplest and most frequently used is the symmetric version given below. A weaker version was proved in 1975 by László Lovász and Paul Erdős in the article ''Problems and results on 3-chromatic hypergraphs and some related questions''. For other versions, see . In 2020, Robin Moser and Gábor Tardos received the Gödel Prize for their algorithmic version of the Lovász L ...

Landau Level
In quantum mechanics, Landau quantization refers to the quantization of the cyclotron orbits of charged particles in a uniform magnetic field. As a result, the charged particles can only occupy orbits with discrete, equidistant energy values, called Landau levels. These levels are degenerate, with the number of electrons per level directly proportional to the strength of the applied magnetic field. It is named after the Soviet physicist Lev Landau. Landau quantization is directly responsible for the electronic susceptibility of metals, known as Landau diamagnetism. Under strong magnetic fields, Landau quantization leads to oscillations in electronic properties of materials as a function of the applied magnetic field known as De Haas–Van Alphen and Shubnikov–de Haas effects. Landau quantization is a key ingredient to explain the integer quantum Hall effect. Derivation Consider a system of non-interacting particles with charge and spin confined to an area in the plane ...

Lenstra–Lenstra–Lovász Lattice Basis Reduction Algorithm
The Lenstra–Lenstra–Lovász (LLL) lattice basis reduction algorithm is a polynomial time lattice reduction algorithm invented by Arjen Lenstra, Hendrik Lenstra and László Lovász in 1982. Given a basis \mathbf = \ with ''n''-dimensional integer coordinates, for a lattice L (a discrete subgroup of R''n'') with d \leq n , the LLL algorithm calculates an ''LLL-reduced'' (short, nearly orthogonal) lattice basis in time \mathcal O(d^5n\log^3 B) where B is the largest length of \mathbf_i under the Euclidean norm, that is, B = \max\left(\, \mathbf_1\, _2, \, \mathbf_2\, _2, \dots, \, \mathbf_d\, _2\right). The original applications were to give polynomial-time algorithms for factorizing polynomials with rational coefficients, for finding simultaneous rational approximations to real numbers, and for solving the integer linear programming problem in fixed dimensions. LLL reduction The precise definition of LLL-reduced is as follows: Given a basis \mathbf=\, define its Gram–Sc ...

Low-level Programming Language
A low-level programming language is a programming language that provides little or no abstraction from a computer's instruction set architecture—commands or functions in the language map that are structurally similar to processor's instructions. Generally, this refers to either machine code or assembly language. Because of the low (hence the word) abstraction between the language and machine language, low-level languages are sometimes described as being "close to the hardware". Programs written in low-level languages tend to be relatively non-portable, due to being optimized for a certain type of system architecture. Low-level languages can convert to machine code without a compiler or interpreter—second-generation programming languages use a simpler processor called an assembler—and the resulting code runs directly on the processor. A program written in a low-level language can be made to run very quickly, with a small memory footprint. An equivalent program in a high-lev ...

Lewis's Trilemma
Lewis's trilemma is an apologetic argument traditionally used to argue for the divinity of Jesus by postulating that the only alternatives were that he was evil or mad.Lewis, C. S., ''God in the Dock'' (Eerdmans, 2014), pages 100–101. One version was popularised by University of Oxford literary scholar and writer C. S. Lewis in a BBC radio talk and in his writings. It is sometimes described as the "Lunatic, Liar, or Lord", or "Mad, Bad, or God" argument. It takes the form of a trilemma — a choice among three options, each of which is in some way difficult to accept. This argument is very popular with Christian apologists, but some theologians and biblical scholarsDavis (2006), page 151 do not believe that Jesus claimed to be God. History This argument has been used in various forms throughout church history. It was used by the American preacher Mark Hopkins in his book ''Lectures on the Evidences of Christianity'' (1846), based on lectures delivered in 1844. Another early use ...

Landau, Luckman, And Lake
Landau, Luckman, and Lake or LLL is a fictional holding company appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics, particularly in the pages of the ''Wolverine'', ''Uncanny X-Men'' and ''Deadpool'' comic books. Created by writer Chris Claremont, the company was first mentioned in ''Wolverine'' #5 (March 1989). Claremont based the name of the organization on the original owners of the Forbidden Planet comic store: Nick Landau, Mike Luckman and Mike Lake. Overview Although Landau, Luckman, and Lake is an intergalactic holding company which oversees and manages a number of subsidiary companies such as a law firm of the same name, it is in reality a front organization for a private espionage contractor which, in turn, is controlled by a cabal conspiring to "immanentize the eschaton". Some of these companies provide cover, plausible occupations and means of income, for its covert agents. LLL is made up of a diverse mixture of personnel, drawn from intelligence or fringe s ...
