Larus
''Larus'' is a large genus of gulls with worldwide distribution (by far the greatest species diversity is in the Northern Hemisphere). Many of its species are abundant and well-known birds in their ranges. Until about 2005–2007, most gulls were placed in this genus, but this arrangement is now known to be polyphyletic, leading to the resurrection of the genera ''Ichthyaetus'', ''Chroicocephalus'', ''Leucophaeus'', and '' Hydrocoloeus'' (this last had been recognized more often than the other genera) for several species traditionally included in ''Larus''. They are in general medium to large birds, typically grey or white, often with black markings on their heads or wings. They have stout, longish bills and webbed feet. The taxonomy of the large gulls in the herring and lesser black-backed complex is very complicated, with different authorities recognising between two and eight species. Larus (supposedly died 207 BC) was a leader of Cantabri, Cantabrian Mercenaries of the ancient Iberian peninsula, mercenaries in the Military of Carthage, Carthaginian army during the Second Punic War, according to Silius Italicus's poem ''Punica (poem), Punica''. Biography Larus is mentioned only by Silius in his poem, where he is noted as the only outstanding man in the battle in Celtiberia that pitted Punic generals Mago Barca and Hanno against their Roman homologue Marcus Junius Silanus (praetor 212 BC), Marcus Junius Silanus. Some authors have doubted of the existence of Larus, noting in Silius the intention to embellish his chronicle of the war with epic heroes and duels in the style of ancient Greek literature. Lárus Guðmundsson (born 12 December 1961) is an Icelandic former professional Association football, footballer who played as a Forward (association football), striker. Club career Guðmundsson started his career at Knattspyrnufélagið Víkingur, Víkingur and later became successful in the German Bundesliga with KFC Uerdingen 05, Bayer Uerdingen and 1. Lárus Sigurðsson
Lárus Orri Sigurðsson (born 4 June 1973), known in English as ''Larus Sigurdsson'', is an Icelandic former professional footballer, who played most notably for Stoke City and West Bromwich Albion in England. Club career Sigurðsson was born in Akureyri and played with Þór Akureyri along with his father Sigurdur Larusson, who later became the manager. His cousin Þorvaldur Örlygsson who was playing in England for Stoke City recommended him to manager Lou Macari and he joined Stoke on trial. Lárus impressed Macari so much that he played him against Portsmouth before he had signed him. He played 23 times in 1994–95 and his performances were so good he won the player of the year award. He was an ever-present in 1995–96 as Stoke reached the play-offs where they lost to Leicester City. He missed just one match in 1996–97 in what was the club's final season at the Victoria Ground. James Larus
James R. Larus is an American computer scientist specializing in the fields of programming languages, compilers, and computer architecture. He is currently at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) where he has served as the Dean of the School of Computer and Communication Sciences (IC) from 2014 until 2021. Before joining EPFL, Larus worked as a Principal Researcher at Microsoft Research (MSR), where he worked from 1998 until 2013. He was at one point the Director of Research and Strategy for Microsoft's eXtreme Computing Group (XCG) where he helped develop the Orleans cloud computing project. He was also one of the two co-leads on Microsoft's Singularity project. Prior to working for Microsoft, James was an associate professor at University of Wisconsin–Madison in the Computer Science department.
