Lyuban, Belarus
Lyuban ( be, Любань, Liubań - russian: Лю́бань, pl, Lubań, lt, Liubanė), or ''Ljubań'', is a town in Belarus, located in the Minsk Region. It is the administrative seat of the Lyuban District. As of 2009 its population was of 11,256. History & Famous Residents The town was first mentioned in 1566 and received its town ( be, горад, horad) status in 1968. The famed Mir Mashgiach Rabbi Yeruchom Levovitz was born in Lyuban. The Israeli writer Rakhel Feygenberg (1895–1972) was also born there. The Rabbi of the town from 1920-1936 was Rabbi Moshe Feinstein. His son Rabbi Dovid Feinstein was born there in 1929. World War II The Nazis occupied the town from July 1941 to June 1944. On August, 1941, 150 to 200 Jews of the village are murdered in a mass execution perpetrated by Germans at a gravel pit near the village of Dubniki. Lyuban ( rus, Любань, p=lʲʊˈbanʲ) is a town in Tosnensky District of Leningrad Oblast, Russia, located on the Tigoda River southeast of St. Petersburg. Population: The median age is 40.9 and the population of Lyuban is 53.5% female. History It was first mentioned in the 15th century as a trade settlement. In 1851, a railway station was built and the development of the settlement of Lyuban-Gorka (), serving the railway station started. On June 3, 1917, Lyuban-Gorka was granted town status and renamed Lyuban. Lyuban was a part of Novgorodsky Uyezd of Novgorod Governorate. On August 1, 1927, the uyezds were abolished and Lyubansky District, with the administrative center in Lyuban, was established. Staryya Darohi be, Старыя Дарогi, Staryja Darohi, russian: Старые Дороги) is a town in Republic of Belarus, the capital of the Staryya Darohi District of Minsk Region. First documental record: 1524. History In 1939, there were more than 1000 Jews living there, making up 28% of the total population. There were 2 synagogues and several Jewish schools. During World War II, in 1941, Jews were imprisoned in a closed ghetto by Germans, some Jews managed to escape before on their own or by train. There was a fenced and guarded ghetto on Kirov street where there was a Jewish school and several houses. A group of Jews was forced to swim into the river and shot by the Germans when they were in the water, but little is known about this massacre.
