Lyons (NJT Station)
Lyons is a New Jersey Transit station in Basking Ridge, New Jersey along the Gladstone Branch of the Morris & Essex Lines. The station serves south Basking Ridge as well as the Hills and Liberty Corner. History Lyons station was originally built in 1931 by Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad to coincide with electrification and to serve the Lyons VA Medical Center, which opened in 1930. It was the last station built by the Delaware, Lackawanna, and Western Railroad in New Jersey and the second-to-last station depot built overall by the DL&W, behind the station at Syracuse, New York in 1941. The single station building, on the north side of the single track, is a Tudor Revival and Mission Revival style structure. Designed by Delaware Lackawanna and Western Railroad architect D.T. Demographics History In 1722, the area was known by its primary landholder, John Annin, as "Annin's Corner." This was changed to "Liberty Corner" during the American Revolution. On August 29, 1781, the First Brigade of the French Army, the Expédition Particulière, under command of the French general Comte de Rochambeau, camped here by Bullion's Tavern, along the route to Yorktown, Virginia. The Lyons VA Medical Center is a United States Department of Veterans Affairs hospital complex located at 151 Knollcroft Road in the Lyons section of Bernards Township in Somerset County, New Jersey. Established in 1930, it is part of the VA New Jersey Health Care System. Listed as the Lyons Veterans Administration Hospital Historic District, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 3, 2013, for its significance in architecture, health/medicine, and politics/government.
