Lynden–Aldergrove Border Crossing
The Lynden–Aldergrove Border Crossing connects the town of Lynden, Washington and Aldergrove, British Columbia on the Canada–US border. Washington State Route 539 on the American side joins British Columbia Highway 13 on the Canadian side. Canadian side W.H. Vanetta provided the initial customs function from his home about north of the boundary. Under the administrative oversight of the Port of New Westminster, the opening date of the post could have been as early as 1886, but was definitely by 1889. In 1899, Vanetta was promoted to a sub-collector when the official status of the location was elevated. When A.C. Salt took charge in 1911, the office had moved to the border. The next year, the Port of Abbotsford assumed oversight. In 1911/12, a customhouse, stable and warehouse were erected at the corner of Jackman (272 St) and Boundary (0 Ave) roads. Lynden is a city in Whatcom County, Washington, United States. It is located north of Bellingham and approximately south of the Canada–US border. The city is located along the Nooksack River and State Route 539. The population of Lynden is about 14,259, according to the United States Census Bureau. Washington State Route 539
State Route 539 (SR 539, named the Guide Meridian) is a north–south state highway in the U.S. state of Washington. The highway travels through northwestern Whatcom County and connects Interstate 5 (I-5) in Bellingham with Lynden and the Canadian border near Langley, British Columbia. The Guide Meridian, named for the guide meridian that it follows while traveling due north–south, was originally a plank road constructed in the late 1880s. It was replaced with a gravel road in the 1910s and a paved highway later that decade by the Whatcom County government. The Guide Meridian was absorbed into the state highway system and designated as Secondary State Highway 1B (SSH 1B) in 1937, which was later supplemented with the creation of U.S. Route 99 Alternate in 1952. Highway 13 is an long two-lane route through the eastern part of Langley, British Columbia. Highway 13 connects Washington state (via Washington State Route 539) to the central Fraser Valley. Route description Highway 13 begins at the Lynden–Aldergrove Border Crossing on the United States border as a continuation of Washington State Route 539, which travels south to Bellingham, Washington. Sumas–Huntingdon Border Crossing
The Sumas–Huntingdon Border Crossing connects Sumas, Washington and Abbotsford, British Columbia on the Canada–United States border, Canada–US border. Washington State Route 9 on the American side joins British Columbia Highway 11 on the Canadian side. Terrain The crossing has been important since this part of the border was delineated in 1846, but it would be several more decades before settlements were established on both sides of the border.
