Lydia Schouten
Lydia Schouten (born 1948, Leiden, Netherlands) is an internationally-known Dutch performance and video artist. Early in her career she critiqued traditional women's roles and the portrayal of women as sex objects. More recently, her work considers themes of loneliness, sex and violence. As of 2004, she lives in Amsterdam. Her work has been exhibited internationally and she has held artist in residencies in several countries. Schouten received the Maaskant Award from city of Rotterdam in 1975. Education Schouten studied at the Vrije Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten, Free Academy of Visual Arts in The Hague from 1967 to 1971 and at the Willem de Kooning Academy, Academy of Visual Arts in Rotterdam from 1971 to 1976. Leiden
Leiden (; in English and archaic Dutch also Leyden) is a city and municipality in the province of South Holland, Netherlands. North Sea Flood Of 1953
The 1953 North Sea flood was a major flood caused by a heavy storm surge that struck the Netherlands, north-west Belgium, England and Scotland. Most sea defences facing the surge were overwhelmed, causing extensive flooding. The storm and flooding occurred at the end of Saturday, 31 January 1953 and morning of the next day. A combination of a high spring tide and a severe European windstorm over the North Sea caused a storm tide. The combination of wind, high tide, and low pressure caused the sea to flood land up to above mean sea level. Flooding summary In the Netherlands 20% of the land was below mean sea level (subsequently with the expansion of Flevoland this proportion has increased); the next-highest 30% sat at less than above sea level. Colijnsplaat is a village in the Province of Zeeland, the Netherlands It is a part of the Municipality of Noord-Beveland, and lies about northeast of Middelburg. History The village was first mentioned in 1489 as "het gors Colinsplate", and means "sand bank belonging to Colijn". The sand bank was diked in the late 16th century. Colijnsplaats developed after the Oud Noord-Bevelandpolder was created in 1598. The village contains a ring road around the church. The Dutch Reformed church is a simple aisleless church. The tower was probably built in 1607. It is plastered white and is located on the edge of the church. The church was rebuilt in 1769. In 1856, a consistory was added to church. The former court house was built between 1768 and 1769. From the 19th century until 1941, it was used as town hall. Colijnsplaats was home to 1,749 people in 1840.
