Luther Martin Kennett
Luther Martin Kennett (March 15, 1807 – April 12, 1873) was a U.S. Representative from Missouri and mayor of the City of St. Louis. Born in Falmouth, Kentucky, Kennett attended private schools. After working as a county clerk of Pendleton County in 1822 and 1823 and of Campbell County, Kentucky in 1824, Kennett moved to St. Louis, Missouri in 1825 and found work in a mercantile establishment. Kennett then spent several years in Europe on account of ill health, before returning to St. Louis in 1849. He served as vice president of the Pacific Railroad Co. He served as mayor of St. Louis from 1850 to 1853 as a member of the Whig Party, and served as president of the St. Louis & Iron Mountain Railroad for a period in 1853. Francis Preston Blair, Jr
Francis Preston Blair Jr. (February 19, 1821 – July 8, 1875) was a United States Senator, a United States Congressman and a Union Major General during the Civil War. He represented Missouri in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, and was active in preventing the State of Missouri from being absorbed into the Confederacy at the beginning of the Civil War. Blair was instrumental in appointing Nathaniel Lyon as the new military commander of the Western Department of the U.S. Army. He assisted Lyon in securing help of the St. Louis Home Guard in moving over 20,000 rifles and muskets from the St. Louis Arsenal to Illinois. Missouri secessionists considered this event as breaking of informal truce established in the state. This set the scene for the Camp Jackson Affair and continuing guerrilla activity by outraged pro-slavery elements. Missouri's 1st Congressional District
Missouri's 1st congressional district is in the eastern portion of the state. It includes all of St. Louis City and much of northern St. Louis County, including the cities of Maryland Heights, University City, Ferguson and Florissant. The district is easily the most Democratic in Missouri, with a Cook Partisan Voting Index of D+29; the next most Democratic district in the state, the Kansas City-based , has a PVI of D+7. Roughly half of the 1st district's population is African American. Its current representative is Democrat Cori Bush, who was elected in 2020. Thomas Hart Benton (senator)
Thomas Hart Benton (March 14, 1782April 10, 1858), nicknamed "Old Bullion", was a United States Senator from Missouri. A member of the Democratic Party, he was an architect and champion of westward expansion by the United States, a cause that became known as Manifest Destiny. Benton served in the Senate from 1821 to 1851, becoming the first member of that body to serve five terms. Benton was born in Harts Mill, Orange County, North Carolina. After graduating from the University of North Carolina, he established a law practice and plantation near Nashville, Tennessee. He served as an aide to General Andrew Jackson during the War of 1812 and settled in St. Louis, Missouri, after the war. Missouri became a state in 1821, and Benton won election as one of its inaugural pair of United States Senators.
