Lurie Prize In Biomedical Sciences
The Lurie Prize in Biomedical Sciences recognizes outstanding achievement by a promising young scientist in biomedical research. It is awarded annually by the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health. Established in 2013 the award is worth $100,000 and was made possible by the gift of FNIH board member Ann Lurie. Prizewinners are selected by a jury of six distinguished biomedical researchers from a list of nominations. Anne Brunet
Anne Brunet (born on November 8) is the Michele and Timothy Barakett Endowed Professor and the co-director of the Paul F. Glenn Laboratories for the Biology of Aging at Stanford University School of Medicine. Her lab studies mechanisms of aging and longevity. Brunet is from Bellegarde sur Valserine, France, uses red wine as an anti-aging strategy, and plays piano and violin. Education Brunet received her BS in biology, summa cum laude, in 1992 from Ecole Normale Supérieure, Paris, France. She immediately began a PhD in the lab of Jacques Pouysségur at the University of Nice, France, which she completed in 1997. Andrew Dillin
Andrew George Dillin is a Howard Hughes Medical Investigator and the Thomas and Stacey Siebel Distinguished Chair in Stem Cell Research at the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology at Berkeley. His lab studies the loss of protein homeostasis in aging, particularly in ''Caenorhabditis elegans''. Xiaowei Zhuang
Xiaowei Zhuang (; born January 1972) is a Chinese-American biophysicist who is the David B. Arnold Jr. Professor of Science, Professor of Chemistry and Chemical Biology, and Professor of Physics at Harvard University, and an Investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. She is best known for her work in the development of Stochastic Optical Reconstruction Microscopy (STORM), a super-resolution fluorescence microscopy method, and the discoveries of novel cellular structures using STORM. She received a 2019 Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences for developing super-resolution imaging techniques that get past the diffraction limits of traditional light microscopes, allowing scientists to visualize small structures within living cells. Aviv Regev (born July 11, 1971) is a computational biologist and systems biologist and Executive Vice President and Head of Genentech Research and Early Development in Genentech/Roche. She is a core member (on leave) at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard and professor (on leave) at the Department of Biology of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Yasmine Belkaid ( ar, ياسمين بلقايد; born 1968) is an Algerian immunologist and senior investigator at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and adjunct professor at the University of Pennsylvania. She is best known for her work studying host-microbe interactions in tissues and immune regulation to microbes. Belkaid currently serves as the director of the NIAID Microbiome program. Zhijian "James" Chen (; born 1966) is a Chinese-American biochemist and professor in the department of molecular biology at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. He is best known for his discovery of mechanisms by which nucleic acids trigger innate and autoimmune responses from the interior of a cell, work for which he received the 2019 Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences. Karl Alexander Deisseroth (born November 18, 1971) is an American scientist. He is the D.H. Chen Professor of Bioengineering and of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Stanford University. He is known for creating and developing the technologies of hydrogel-tissue chemistry (e.g., CLARITY, STARmap) and optogenetics, and for applying integrated optical and genetic strategies to study normal neural circuit function, as well as dysfunction in neurological and psychiatric disease. Jennifer Anne Doudna (; born February 19, 1964) is an American biochemist who has done pioneering work in CRISPR gene editing, and made other fundamental contributions in biochemistry and genetics. Doudna was one of the first women to share a Nobel in the sciences. She received the 2020 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, with Emmanuelle Charpentier, "for the development of a method for genome editing."
