Guadalupe (name)
Guadalupe is a unisex given name in the Spanish language. The name initially designated the Guadalupe river in the province of Extremadura, Spain. See the article about the river for the hypotheses on the origin of the name. The name became famous as a result of a 16th-century Marian apparition and associated pilgrimage site, located in a town called Guadalupe near the source of the Guadalupe river. The apparition, and the statue associated with it, was originally known as "Our Lady of Guadalupe" and is now known as "Our Lady of Guadalupe, Extremadura" or "Our Lady of Extremadura". Two centuries later, the name gained additional fame through association with another Marian apparition in Mexico associated with the name Guadalupe. The apparition and the image it made famous became known as Our Lady of Guadalupe. The Mexican Guadalupe supplanted her Spanish original both in name and in fame. Lupe (horse)
Lupe (1967–1989) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse. In a racing career lasting from September 1969 until July 1971, the filly ran seven times and won six races. As a three-year-old she won the Oaks at Epsom and the Yorkshire Oaks at York before sustaining her only defeat in the Prix Vermeille. Lupe returned as a four-year-old and defeated colts to win the Coronation Cup and the Princess of Wales's Stakes. She was then retired from racing and became a successful broodmare. Background Lupe was a bay filly bred at the Snailwell Stud in Newmarket. The stud was owned by Stanhope Joel, and Lupe raced in the colours of Joel's wife, Gladys. The filly was bred for stamina: her sire Primera won the fourteen-furlong Ebor Handicap while her dam Alcoa, was an out-and-out stayer who won over two and a quarter miles and finished second in the Cesarewitch. SAR-Lupe is Germany's first reconnaissance satellite system and is used for military purposes. SAR is an abbreviation for synthetic-aperture radar, and "Lupe" is German for magnifying glass. The Pacific imperial pigeon (''Ducula pacifica'') is a widespread species of pigeon in the family Columbidae. It is found in American Samoa, the Cook Islands, the smaller islands of eastern Fiji, Kiribati, Niue, the smaller satellite islands of Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, and Wallis and Futuna Islands. Taxonomy The Pacific imperial pigeon was formally described in 1789 by the German naturalist Johann Friedrich Gmelin in his revised and expanded edition of Carl Linnaeus's ''Systema Naturae''. He placed it with all the other doves and pigeons in the genus ''Columba'' and coined the binomial name ''Columba pacifica''. Isaias Guadalupe "Lupe" Aquino (born 23 January 1963) is a Mexican former professional boxer who competed from 1981 to 1999. Aquino, known as "Lupe", turned pro in 1981 and won the WBC light middleweight title in 1987 with a decision over Duane Thomas. He lost the title in his first defense via a close decision to Gianfranco Rosi. In 1988 Aquino took on John David Jackson for the inaugural WBO light middleweight title. In the fight, Aquino was put down in 1st and retired after the 7th round. In 1993, Aquino would again challenge for the vacant WBO light middleweight title against Verno Phillips on a Top Rank fight card that also featured Michael Carbajal's successful defense of the unified WBC and IBF light flyweight titles against challenger Domingo Sosa as well as up and coming prospect Oscar De La Hoya.
