Lungitz
Lungitz is a village in the community of Katsdorf, Perg (district), Perg district of Upper Austria, Austria. During World War II it was the site of slave labour and the "Gusen III concentration camp, Gusen III" Subcamp (SS), sub-camp of the Gusen concentration camp later on. Although camp Gusen III was not opened earlier than December 1944, inmates of camp Gusen worked in a brick production plant at Lungitz already in 1940. In this early period, these inmates drove by truck every day from Gusen via Sankt Georgen an der Gusen, St. Georgen to Lunigtz. With 1943 inmates of camp Gusen started the construction of a bakery for the Mauthausen-Gusen complex that only became operational in February 1945. Gusen III Concentration Camp
Gusen was a subcamp of Mauthausen concentration camp operated by the SS () between the villages of Sankt Georgen an der Gusen and Langenstein, Austria, Langestein in the Reichsgau Ostmark (currently Perg District, Upper Austria). Primarily populated by Polish prisoners, there were also large numbers of Spanish Republican Army, Spanish Republicans, Soviet citizens, and Italians. Initially, prisoners worked in nearby quarries, producing granite which was sold by the SS company DEST. Conditions were worse than at the Mauthausen main camp due to the camp's purpose of extermination through labor of real and perceived enemies of Nazi Germany. The life expectancy of prisoners was as short as six months, and at least 35,000 people died there from forced labor, starvation, and mass executions. Subcamp (SS)
Subcamps (german: KZ-Außenlager), also translated as satellite camps, were outlying detention centres (''Haftstätten'') that came under the command of a main concentration camp run by the SS in Nazi Germany and German-occupied Europe. The Nazis distinguished between the List of Nazi concentration camps, main camps (or ''Stammlager'') and the subcamps (''Außenlager'' or ''Außenkommandos'') subordinated to them. Survival conditions in the subcamps were, in many cases, poorer for the prisoners than those in the main camps. Emergence of the concept Within a concentration camp prisoners had to carry out various tasks. They were not supposed to be idle whilst interned. German Earth and Stone Works (german: Deutsche Erd- und Steinwerke GmbH, ) was an SS-owned company created to procure and manufacture building materials for state construction projects in Nazi Germany.
