Lunatia
''Lunatia'' is a genus of predatory sea snails, marine gastropod mollusks in the family Naticidae, the moon snails.Bouchet, P. (2012). Lunatia. Accessed through: World Register of Marine Species at http://www.marinespecies.org/aphia.php?p=taxdetails&id=150577 on 2012-07-12 The species in this genus have been brought in synonymy mostly with ''Euspira'' Torigoe & Inaba (2011) provided a rather arbitrary assignment of species to respectively ''Euspira'' and ''Lunatia'' and this has been at one time uploaded in the WoRMS classification. However this is not based on any in-depth phylogenetic analysis and has proved inconsistent when some closely related European species (e.g. Euspira guillemini, E. macilenta) were then not congeneric. Until a substantiated phylogenetic hypothesis is published for the group, ''Lunatia'' is here considered a junior subjective synonym of ''Euspira'' and all the species accepted under ''Euspira'', following in this Marincowich (1977), Kabat (1991) and t ...

''Euspira nitida'' (common name : common necklace shell) is a species of sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusc in the family Naticidae, the moon snails.Bouchet, P.; Gofas, S. (2015). Euspira nitida (Donovan, 1804). In: MolluscaBase (2015). Accessed through: World Register of Marine Species at http://www.marinespecies.org/aphia.php?p=taxdetails&id=151894 on 2015-06-21 Distribution The common necklace shell is a common sea snail occurring in the sublittoral zone and deeper waters (exceptionally up to 2,000 m) along sandy coasts of the North Sea, from France to Norway, and the North East Atlantic (Iceland). It is also common in the Mediterranean Sea. It can be frequently found in great numbers washed ashore on beaches. It has been present in the North Sea since the Pliocene. Description of the shell The globular shell is rather small with a low spire : max. 16 mm high and 14 mm wide. The shell has a rather pointed apex. There are 5 to 6 gently convex whorls with an undeep ...

Accessed through: World Register of Marine Species at http://www.marinespecies.org/aphia.php?p=taxdetails&id=150590 on 2012-08-15 Fossil records The fossil record of this species dates back to the Miocene (age range: 13.65 to 0.012 million years ago). These fossils have been found in Morocco, the Netherlands, Spain, Italy, United Kingdom and Slovakia. Description The rounded shell is thin and polished and brownish-yellow, with a row of reddish markings just below the suture of the last whorl. It can grow to about and has a short spire and seven rounded whorls separated with distinct sutures. The lowest whorl occupies about 90% of the volume. It has a large umbilicus and the operculum is ear-shaped and spirally w ...

Naticidae
Naticidae, common name moon snails or necklace shells, is a family (biology), family of medium to large-sized predatory sea snails, marine (ocean), marine gastropod molluscs in the clade Littorinimorpha. The shells of the species in this family are mostly globular in shape. Naticidae is the only family in the superfamily Naticoidea. It has been estimated that worldwide there are about 260–270 Holocene, recent species of naticid snails. This group is assumed to have originated in the late Triassic or in the early Jurassic. Members of this family can be recognized by the shape of their shells, distinct appearance, or by their predatory behavior. Distribution Naticids are widely distributed and occur worldwide. The greatest Biodiversity, diversity of both species and genera is found in tropical regions. Even so, naticid snails are also plentiful in temperate, Arctic and Antarctic waters. Habitat Moon snails live on sandy substrate (biology), substrates, at a great variety of dep ...
