Luis Gómez (baseball)
Luis Gómez (born August 19, 1951) is a Mexican former professional baseball player who played during the 1970s and 1980s. Born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico in 1951 and raised in the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, he attended and graduated from Nightingale Jr. High, then attended Belmont High School in Los Angeles, California and UCLA. In 1969 Luis set two records in baseball and football at Belmont High with a .559 batting average and with 2,148 total yards as a quarterback. The 5'9" Gómez played on the UCLA baseball team for three years ('71-'73) at shortstop. There he compiled a batting average of .272, 2 HR, including a grand slam, and 34 RBI. During his senior year, his batting average was .301 in 52 games and 186 at bats. Luis started his major league baseball career with the Minnesota Twins in 1974, playing with them until 1977. Gómez represents Panama at the Davis Cup where he has a singles W/L record of 2–3, and a doubles W/L of 4–8. The Group III Americas event took place 17 to 22 June 2019 at the Escazu Country Club in Costa Rica on hard court, and Gómez participated in both singles and doubles. Luis Moses Gomez (c. 1660–1740 ) was a Spanish-Sephardic Jewish merchant and trader, whose Spanish Jewish ancestors fled to France and England to escape from the Spanish Inquisition for the New World. Gomez came to New York in 1703. In 1705 he was granted an Act of Denization from Queen Anne of England. This certificate gave him rights to conduct business, own property, and live freely within the Colonies without an oath of allegiance to the Church of England. Gomez established himself as a prominent businessman and leader within the early Jewish community in New York and in 1714 he purchased in Marlboro on the west side of the Hudson River in the then-British colony of New York. There he built a single-story fieldstone block house now called the Gomez Mill House. For some thirty years he and his sons lived there and ran a profitable fur trading post. Luis Arce Gómez (1938 – March 30, 2020) was a colonel in the Bolivian Army. In 1980 he backed the bloody coup (sometimes referred to as the "Cocaine Coup") that brought to power the General Luis García Meza. Arce served as García Meza's Minister of the Interior. Biography Early life Arce was born in 1938 in Sucre, Bolivia. He was the cousin of the notorious Bolivian drug lord Roberto Suárez Goméz. Career Arce's tenure as Minister involved the passing of such measures as the banning of all political parties, the incarceration and/or exile of most political opponents, the repression of trade unions, and the censorship of the mass media. Arce had said that all Bolivians who may be opposed to the new order should "walk around with their written will under their arms."
