Luigi Viviani
Luigi Viviani (Verona, 22 October 1937) is an Italian politician and trade unionist, actively involved in various national and local political activities and in the political fabric of Verona. Biography During the 1980s Viviani was a member of the general secretariat of the Italian Confederation of Workers' Trade Unions during the secretariat of Pierre Carniti. In 1993 he co-founded the movement of the Social Christians with Ermanno Gorrieri, Pierre Carniti and other political exponents. He then became a senator of the Republic for two legislatures. During the 1996-2001 legislature he was Undersecretary for Labour with Minister Cesare Salvi; in the next legislature (2001-2006) he was vice-president of the Democrats of the Left group in the Senate. The Senate of the Republic ( it, Senato della Repubblica), or simply the Senate ( it, Senato), is the upper house of the bicameral Italian Parliament (the other being the Chamber of Deputies). The two houses together form a perfect bicameral system, meaning they perform identical functions, but do so separately. Pursuant to the Articles 57, 58, and 59 of the Italian Constitution, the Senate has 200 elective members, of which 196 are elected from Italian constituencies, and 4 from Italian citizens living abroad. Furthermore, there is a small number (currently 6) of senators for life (''senatori a vita''), either appointed or ''ex officio''. Cesare Salvi (born 9 June 1948) is an Italian politician who served as minister of labor and social security. Early life Salvi was born in Lecce on 9 June 1948. Career Salvi was the spokesperson for the secretary of the Democrats of the Left (DS). He was a senator from 1992 to 2008. He was also head of the DS senators. He served as the ''relatore'' (secretary) for one of the four sub-committees (specifically one about the form of government) dealing the future form of the Italian governments under the joint constitutional committee launched during the period of 1997-1998. He was appointed labor minister to the cabinet headed by Prime Minister Giuliano Amato in June 2000. Salvi replaced Antonio Bassolino as labor minister. He was in office until 2001. Ermanno Gorrieri
Ermanno Gorrieri (26 November 1920 – 29 December 2004) was an Italian politician and economist. Biography Gorrieri was born in Magreta in 1920. In 1928 he moved to Modena, where he graduated in law, and became an officer of the Alpine troops. During World War II he participated in the resistance and was active in the creation of the short-lived Republic of Montefiorino. After the war he was a trade union activist and one of the founders of the CISL. Between 1958 and 1963 he was a member of the Chamber of Deputies, and was Minister of Labor in 1987. One of his main interests was the problem of poverty. He authored five books and collaborated on fourteen more. Originally a member of the Christian Democratic party, he was one of the founders (with Pierre Carniti) of the Social Christians in 1993. Pierre Carniti
Pierre Carniti (25 September 1936 – 5 June 2018) was an Italian politician and trade unionist. Carniti was born in Castelleone, in the province of Cremona, Lombardy. He was general secretary of CISL, the major Catholic trade union federation, between 1979 and 1985. Unlike most other CISL leaders, who were aligned with Christian Democracy, Carniti was a member of the Italian Socialist Party (PSI). Carniti was president of the Parliamentary Commission on Poverty from 1994 to 1997. He was a Member of the European Parliament from 1989 to 1999, associated with the Party of European Socialists. In 1993, with Ermanno Gorrieri, he left the PSI to co-found the socialist party Social Christians (CS).
