Luciole (barge)
The ''Luciole'' is a converted French barge, or '' péniche''. She was built in 1926. In 1966 she became the first hotel barge on the French canal system. She now operates on the Canal du Nivernais and River Yonne, her home mooring is in Auxerre. History The ''Luciole'' was constructed in 1926 at the Chantiers de Petite-Synthe in Dunkerque as the mule-drawn vessel ''Ponctuel''. Later equipped with an engine, she carried 180 tons of cargo. In 1966 an Englishman, Richard Parsons, bought her and converted her to become the first hotel-barge plying the rivers and canals of France, under the name ''Palinurus'', carrying 22 passengers. She operated in the Burgundy region, before moving southward to the Canal du Midi and Canal Latéral à la Garonne. In 1985 she was purchased by the British company Inland Voyages Ltd and brought back to Burgundy. Péniche (barge)
A péniche (or spits in Dutch) is a steel motorised inland waterway barge of up to 350 tonnes' capacity. Péniche barges were built to fit the post-1880s French waterways and the locks of Freycinet gauge. They are visually similar to a Dutch barge, but built to different specifications. Dimensions The critical detail for the péniche is the dimension, a maximum of 38.50m (126 ft) long, 1.60m draft and wide. They were especially designed for the Belgian and French canal locks, and as a result of the wish to maximise space for freight, the barges tend to be flat-sided, with short, rounded bows and sterns. Canal Du Nivernais
The Canal du Nivernais links the Loire with the Seine, following approximately the course of the river Yonne in a south to north direction. It first climbs northeast and north to cross the Morvan watershed, then roughly follows the course of the Yonne. Beginning on the Loire in the village of Saint-Léger-des-Vignes, it reaches its half-way point at the town of Clamecy and finishes at Auxerre on the Yonne. The canal is long and has 112 locks.
