Luay Hamza Abbas
Luay Hamza Abbas (born 1965) is an Iraqi writer. He now teaches literary criticism at Basra University. Abbas has published several volumes of short stories and one novel. In 2010, the National Endowment of the Arts awarded a grant to academic and translator Yasmeen Hanoosh to translate Abbas' short story collection ''Closing His Eyes'' (2008). The title story of this volume was translated earlier in Banipal 27 and also won the 2006 Kikah Best Short Story Award in London

Iraqi People
Iraqis ( ar, العراقيون, ku, گهلی عیراق, gelê Iraqê) are people who originate from the country of Iraq. Iraq consists largely of most of ancient Mesopotamia, the native land of the indigenous Sumerian, Akkadian, Assyrian, and Babylonian civilizations, which was subsequently conquered, invaded and ruled by foreigners for centuries after the fall of the indigenous Mesopotamian empires. As a direct consequence of this long history, the contemporary Iraqi population comprises a significant number of different ethnicities. However, recent studies indicate that the different ethno-religious groups of Iraq (Mesopotamia) share significant similarities in genetics, likely due to centuries of assimilation between invading populations and the indigenous ethnic groups. Literary criticism (or literary studies) is the study, evaluation, and interpretation of literature. Modern literary criticism is often influenced by literary theory, which is the philosophical discussion of literature's goals and methods. Though the two activities are closely related, literary critics are not always, and have not always been, theorists. Whether or not literary criticism should be considered a separate field of inquiry from literary theory is a matter of some controversy. The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) is an independent agency of the United States federal government that offers support and funding for projects exhibiting artistic excellence. Yasmeen Hanoosh
Yasmeen Hanoosh is an academic, fiction writer, and translator from Iraq. She was born in Basra in 1978. She moved to the United States in 1995, subsequently obtaining a BA, MA and PhD (in Middle Eastern Studies) from the University of Michigan. The title of her doctoral thesis, submitted in 2008, was "The Politics of Minority: Chaldeans between Iraq and America". She is currently a professor of Arabic at Portland State University. Hanoosh is the author of the Arabic short story collectioأرض الخيرات الملعونة(Land of Cursed Riches, Al-Ahliyyah 2021). Her Arabic short stories have appeared on Kikah Magazine, Banipal Magazine, Al-Jadid Newspaper among others, and have been translated into English, Spanish, and Italian. Hanoosh is also a translator of literary works from Arabic to English.
