Lower Hergest
Lower Hergest is a hamlet in Herefordshire, England. The local manor house, Hergest Court, is a Grade II* listed building built of a mixture of stone and timber frame with a moat. It dates back to c1430 and was built for Thomas Vaughan, son of Sir Roger Vaughan. Herefordshire () is a county in the West Midlands of England, governed by Herefordshire Council. It is bordered by Shropshire to the north, Worcestershire to the east, Gloucestershire to the south-east, and the Welsh counties of Monmouthshire and Powys to the west. Roger Vaughan Of Tretower
Sir Roger Vaughan (died 1471) of Tretower Court, was the son of Welsh noblewoman Gwladys ferch Dafydd Gam and Sir Roger Vaughan of Bredwardine, who fought and died with Gwladys's father, Dafydd Gam in the Battle of Agincourt in 1415. Personal life Roger was married three times. His first wife, Denise (her name is sometimes given as Cicely), daughter of Thomas ab Philip Vychan, of Talgarth, celebrated in one of the poems of Lewus Glyn Cothi, died not long after Roger's return from the Battle of Agincourt. Sir John Hawkins
Sir John Hawkins (also spelled Hawkyns) (1532 – 12 November 1595) was a pioneering English naval commander, naval administrator and privateer. He pioneered, and was an early promoter of, English involvement in the Atlantic slave trade. Hawkins is considered to be the first English merchant to profit from the Triangle Trade, selling enslaved people from Africa to the Spanish colonies of Santo Domingo and Venezuela in the late 16th century. As Treasurer of the Navy (1578–1595), Hawkins became the chief architect of the Elizabethan Navy, he rebuilt older ships and directed the design of faster ships. In 1588, Hawkins served as a Vice-Admiral and assisted in the defeat of the Spanish Armada, he was knighted for gallantry. Hawkins' son, Richard Hawkins, was captured by the Spanish and in response he raised a fleet of 27 ships to attack the Spanish in the West Indies, he died at sea during the expedition.
