Louisiana State Open
The Louisiana State Open was the state open golf tournament in the U.S. state of Louisiana, open to both amateur and professional golfers. History The inaugural event was held in 1937 and won by Gray Little. The event was not held in the mid-1940s due to World War II. The tournament re-started in November of 1946. The tournament and was held at Louisiana State University's golf course in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The eligibility requirements were reported as: "Professionals and amateurs who have been residents of the state 60 days prior to the tourney are eligible. Also all military personnel and students at Louisiana schools are eligible." In the mid-1950s, the state open and the state's professional golf organization championships started to be played concurrently. In 1963, Homero Blancas, then a private in the military, won the tournament. He was one of the first amateurs to win the event. Homero Blancas
Homero Blancas, Jr. (born March 7, 1938) is an American professional golfer who has played on both the PGA Tour and the Senior PGA Tour (now known as the Champions Tour). Amateur career Blancas, who is of Mexican American descent, was born in Houston, Texas. He attended the University of Houston from 1958 to 1962, and was a member of the golf team. Blancas shot a record-setting round of 55 (27-28) in a college tournament, which stands as the lowest round in the history of competitive golf. His 13 birdies and an eagle on a par-70 course in Longview, Texas on August 19, 1962 earned him the nickname "Mr. 55." He was inducted into the University of Houston Athletics Hall of Fame in 1978. The PGA Tour (stylized in all capital letters as PGA TOUR by its officials) is the organizer of professional golf tours in the United States and North America. Jerry Stolhand
Jerry Stolhand (April 17, 1935 – February 1, 1989) was an American golfer. Stolhand turned pro in the mid-1950s and quickly had success, winning the Louisiana State Open. However, he ultimately regained his amateur status and moved to Hawaii. While working as a car salesman, Stolhand played a number of notable amateur events in the state, culminating with a win at the 1968 Hawaii Amateur. Shortly thereafter, he turned pro once again and moved to Australia. Stolhand played on full-time Australian circuit during the late 1960s and early 1970s, recording a number of high finishes but failed to win. For the remainder of his career, he worked as a club professional though had some success as a senior, winning the 1988 Australian PGA Seniors Championship. Fred Haas
Frederick Theodore Haas Jr. (January 3, 1916 – January 26, 2004) was an American professional golfer. Amateur career Haas was born in Portland, Arkansas. After graduating from Dermott High School, he graduated from Louisiana State University in 1937, winning the NCAA individual championship in his senior year. Professional career Haas's first PGA Tour win, at the Memphis Invitational as an amateur, broke Byron Nelson's record streak of 11 straight victories (Nelson finished 4th). He turned pro in early 1946. He played on the 1953 Ryder Cup team. Personal life Haas died in Metairie, Louisiana at age 88. DeWitt Weaver (golfer)
DeWitt Thompson Weaver Jr. (September 14, 1939 – March 18, 2021) was an American golf consultant and professional golfer who played on the PGA Tour and the Senior PGA Tour. Early life Weaver was born in Danville, Kentucky. He spent part of his youth there and in Lubbock, Texas, where his father was the head football coach at Texas Tech in the 1950s. In high school, he excelled in a number of sports. Amateur career After graduation, he enrolled at Southern Methodist University, where he was a multisport letterman. Weaver moved to Georgia after college and became a dominant player in Georgia amateur golf. Professional career Weaver turned professional in 1964.
