Louisiana Senate
The Louisiana State Senate (french: Sénat de Louisiane) is the upper house of the Louisiana State Legislature, state legislature of Louisiana. All senators serve four-year terms and are assigned to multiple committees. Composition The Louisiana State Senate is composed of 39 senators elected from single-member districts from across the state of Louisiana by the electors thereof. Senators must be a qualified elector (registered voter), be at least eighteen years of age, be domiciled in their district for at least one year, and must have been a resident of the state for at least two years. The senate is the judge of its members' qualifications and elections. All candidates for a senate seat in a district run in a nonpartisan blanket primary and in a runoff if necessary. Elections to the Senate occur every four years and senators are limited to three four-year terms (12 years). If a seat is vacated early during a term then it will be filled in a special election. Louisiana's 5th State Senate district is one of 39 districts in the Louisiana State Senate. It had previously been represented by Democrat Karen Carter Peterson since a 2010 special election to replace resigning fellow Democrat Cheryl Gray Evans until her resignation in April 2022. It is currently the most Democratic-leaning district in the Senate. Geography District 5 is primarily located in New Orleans, including parts of Carrollton, the Garden District, Mid-City New Orleans, and Uptown New Orleans, stretching to also cover a small part of Jefferson Parish. James Harris III is an American politician from New Orleans, Louisiana. A Democrat, Harris has represented District 4 in the Louisiana State Senate since 2020; he previously represented District 99 in the Louisiana House of Representatives between 2016 and 2020. Gonzales is a city in Ascension Parish, Louisiana, United States. As of the 2020 census, it has a population of 12,231. Slidell is a city on the northeast shore of Lake Pontchartrain in St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 28,781 at the 2020 census. It is part of the New Orleans− Metairie−Kenner metropolitan statistical area. History Beginning One of the earlier settlers to the area was Foster Willie. Along with a younger brother, Wesley Coke Asbury Gause, Judge Wingate, and several others, he left Shallotte, North Carolina, on February 18, and arrived at Pearlington, Mississippi, on April 14, 1836.
