Louis Édouard Paul Lieutard
Louis Édouard Paul Lieutard (Brignoles, 21 June 1842 — 23 October 1902) was a French Navy officer. He notably set a formal claim for France on the Kerguelen Islands in 1893. Mont Lieutard was named in his honour. Biography Lieutard joined the Navy in 1859. He was promoted to Midshipman at Toulon in 1861, to Ensign in 1865, and to Lieutenant in 1865. He served on the aviso ''Vaudreuil'', the armoured frigate ''Gauloise'', and the armoured frigate ''Provence''. In 1884, he was given command of the schooner ''Aorai'' at Tahiti, and was promoted to Commander the year after. After working ashore at Toulon for several years, he was given command of the gunboat ''Fusée'' in 1891. In 1892, Lieutard was given command of ''Eure''. Brignoles
Brignoles (; oc, Brinhòla) is a commune in the Var department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region of Southeastern France. Alongside Draguignan, it is one of two subprefectures in Var. Kerguelen Islands
The Kerguelen Islands ( or ; in French commonly ' but officially ', ), also known as the Desolation Islands (' in French), are a group of islands in the sub-Antarctic constituting one of the two exposed parts of the Kerguelen Plateau, a large igneous province mostly submerged in the southern Indian Ocean. They are among the most isolated places on Earth, located more than from Madagascar. The islands, along with Adélie Land, the Crozet Islands, Amsterdam and Saint Paul islands, and France's Scattered Islands in the Indian Ocean, are part of the French Southern and Antarctic Lands and are administered as a separate district. The French ironclad ''Gauloise'' was one of 10 armored frigates built for the French Navy () during the 1860s. Commissioned in 1867, she was initially assigned to the Northern Squadron () and usually served as a flagship. The ironclad played a minor role in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–1871, blockading the Baltic and North Sea coasts of Prussia. The French ironclad ''Provence'' was the lead ship of her class of 10 armored frigates built for the French Navy () during the 1860s. Commissioned in 1865, she spent the bulk of her career with the Mediterranean Squadron (), often serving as a flagship. The ironclad played a minor role in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–1871, blockading the North Sea coast of Prussia. ''Provence'' was decommissioned after the war, but was reactivated in late 1875. ''Eure'' was a ''Meurthe''-class aviso of the French Navy. She was launched in 1886. She is notable as having claimed territories of the Southern Indian Ocean for France, including the Kerguelen Islands in 1893. She continued to serve in the Pacific until 1901. Career Construction of ''Eure'' began in 1886 at the Ateliers et chantiers du Havre. She was part of a 1885 order comprising six other avisos of the same class (''Meurthe'', ''Drôme'', ''Aube'', ''Durance'', ''Rance'' and ''Manche''), designed as mixed sail and steam ships. ''Eure'' was launched on 5 April 1886, and commissioned on 14 August 1890 at Rochefort, where she was based.
