Louis-Joseph Riopel
Louis-Joseph Riopel (September 16, 1841 – May 11, 1915) was a lawyer, notary and political figure in Quebec. He represented Bonaventure in the Legislative Assembly of Quebec from 1881 to 1882 and Bonaventure in the House of Commons of Canada from 1882 to 1891 as a Conservative member. He was born in St-Jacques-L'Achigan, Canada East, the son of Louis Riopel and Julie Mercure. Riopel was educated at the Collège de l'Assomption, then articled as a notary with Louis Archambeault, was qualified to practice in 1865 and set up practice in New Carlisle. In 1875, he married Marie Louise Justine Robitaille, the daughter of a notary. Riopel served as Superintendent of Colonization and Public Works for Bonaventure County from 1869 to 1873 and then crown lands agent from 1873 to 1880. Louis Archambeault
Louis Archambeault (November 7, 1814 – March 3, 1890) was a Quebec notary and political figure. He was a Liberal-Conservative Member of Parliament representing L'Assomption from 1867 to 1874. He was born Louis Archambault at Longue-Pointe (now part of Montreal) in Lower Canada in 1814. He became a notary in 1836 and set up a practice at Saint-Roch-de-l’Achigan, also becoming mayor. He was warden of Leinster County from 1848 to 1853, when the county was split into L'Assomption and Montcalm; he was warden of L'Assomption in 1854 and 1877. In 1855, he moved to the village of L'Assomption. In the same year, he was accused of having inflated his expenses while serving as a returning officer in two earlier elections. In 1858, he was elected to the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada for L'Assomption; he was defeated in 1861 but reelected in 1863. Bonaventure ( ; it, Bonaventura ; la, Bonaventura de Balneoregio; 1221 – 15 July 1274), born Giovanni di Fidanza, was an Italian Catholic Franciscan, bishop, Cardinal (Catholic Church), cardinal, Scholasticism, scholastic theologian and philosopher. The seventh Minister General (Franciscan), Minister General of the Order of Friars Minor, he also served for a time as Roman Catholic Suburbicarian Diocese of Albano, Bishop of Albano. He was canonised on 14 April 1482 by Pope Sixtus IV and declared a Doctor of the Church in 1588 by Pope Sixtus V. He is known as the "Seraphic Doctor" ( la, Doctor Seraphicus). New Carlisle, Quebec is a town in the Gaspésie–Îles-de-la-Madeleine region of Quebec, Canada. It best known as the boyhood home of René Lévesque although he was born in Campbellton, New Brunswick. Its population is approximately 1,388, most of which anglophone but many of which is francophone. New Carlisle is located on the Baie des Chaleurs. New Carlisle is the seat of Bonaventure Regional County Municipality, the judicial district of Bonaventure, and the regional base for the Ministry of Transports Quebec, which has an operations centre on the outskirts of town. Canada East
Canada East (french: links=no, Canada-Est) was the northeastern portion of the United Province of Canada. Lord Durham's Report investigating the causes of the Upper and Lower Canada Rebellions recommended merging those two colonies. The new colony, known as the Province of Canada, was created by the Act of Union 1840 passed by the Parliament of the United Kingdom, having effect in 1841. For administrative purposes, the new Province was subdivided into Canada West and Canada East. The former name of "Lower Canada" came back into official use in 1849, and as of the Canadian Confederation of 1867 it formed the newly created province of Quebec.
