Louisiana's 31st State Senate District
Louisiana's 31st State Senate district is one of 39 districts in the Louisiana State Senate. It has been represented by Republican Louie Bernard since 2020, succeeding term-limited fellow Republican Gerald Long. Geography District 31 covers the Central Louisiana parishes of Red River and Sabine as well as parts of Grant, Natchitoches, Rapides, and Winn Parishes, including some or all of Alexandria, Natchitoches, Many, Winnfield, and Coushatta. The district is split between Louisiana's 4th and 5th congressional districts, and overlaps with the 7th, 13th, 22nd, 23rd, 24th, 25th, 26th, and 27th districts of the Louisiana House of Representatives. Gerald Long (born July 9, 1944) is an American politician. He served as a Republican member for the 31st district of the Louisiana State Senate. Long was born in Winnfield, Louisiana. He was the brother of Jimmy D. Long, and his paternal grandfather was Gillis William Long. Other relatives were the politicians George S. Long, Huey Long, Earl Long, Russell B. Long and Speedy Long. Natchitoches ( ; french: link=no, Les Natchitoches) is a small city and the parish seat of Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana, United States. Established in 1714 by Louis Juchereau de St. Denis as part of French Louisiana, the community was named after the indigenous Natchitoches people. The Louisiana State Senate (french: Sénat de Louisiane) is the upper house of the state legislature of Louisiana. All senators serve four-year terms and are assigned to multiple committees. Composition The Louisiana State Senate is composed of 39 senators elected from single-member districts from across the state of Louisiana by the electors thereof. Senators must be a qualified elector (registered voter), be at least eighteen years of age, be domiciled in their district for at least one year, and must have been a resident of the state for at least two years. Natchitoches Parish (french: Paroisse des Natchitoches or ) is a parish located in the U.S. state of Louisiana. As of the 2010 census, the population was 39,566. The parish seat is Natchitoches. The parish was formed in 1805. The Natchitoches, LA Micropolitan Statistical Area includes all of Natchitoches Parish. This is the heart of the Cane River Louisiana Creole community, free people of color of mixed-race descent who settled here in the antebellum period.
