Pierre Abraham Lorillard (1742 – 1776) was a French-American tobacconist who founded the business which developed into the Lorillard Tobacco Company, which claimed to be the oldest tobacco firm in the United States and in the world. Newport (cigarette)
Newport is an American brand of menthol cigarettes, currently owned and manufactured by the R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. The brand was originally named for the seaport of Newport, Rhode Island. History Newport was launched in 1957 by the Lorillard Tobacco Company. The cigarette originated within Ireland and was introduced to the culture mostly for the male drinkers of the time. The spinnaker present on all packs since the late 1950s is meant to capitalize on the association with sailing. The original Newport had a white filter and a hint of mint; both were gone in 1969 and thus the white filter was replaced by a standard filter. Old Gold is an American brand of cigarette owned and manufactured by the R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. History Old Gold was introduced in 1926 by the Lorillard Tobacco Company and, upon release, would become one of its star products. By 1930, with the aid of a campaign from Lennen & Mitchell that featured exuberant flappers and the slogan ''"Not a cough in a carload"'', Old Gold won 7% of the market. During the 1930s, Lennen & Mitchell built the Old Gold brand on radio by advertising in music programming targeting young people. In 1941, Lorillard moved the Old Gold account to J. Walter Thompson Co., which changed the brand's slogan to ''"Something new has been added"''. On TV, in the 1950s, Old Gold was known for its dancing cigarette packages (women wearing white boots and Old Gold packages), which tapped in time to an Old Gold jingle. Lorillard Snuff Mill (EXTERIOR VIEW)
The Lorillard Snuff Mill now known as the Lillian and Amy Goldman Stone Mill, is the oldest existing tobacco manufacturing building in the United States. It was built around 1840 next to the Bronx River to supplement an earlier building of the same function. The schist that makes up its walls was quarried locally. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1977 and is located inside the New York Botanical Garden, itself an NHL. and The Lorillard firm was founded by Pierre Abraham Lorillard in 1760. His two sons, Peter and George, took over after he was killed during the American Revolutionary War, and they moved the manufacturing portion of the business to this location in the Bronx in 1792. Kent is an American brand of cigarettes, currently owned and manufactured by R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company in the United States and British American Tobacco elsewhere. The brand is named after Herbert Kent, a former executive at Lorillard Tobacco Company. Maverick (originally branded as Harley Davidson), is an American brand of cigarettes, currently owned and manufactured by ITG Brands, a subsidiary of Imperial Brands, Imperial Tobacco. History Mavericks were originally introduced on a limited basis in 1986 and branded as Harley Davidson cigarettes by the Lorillard Tobacco Company. Despite a large advertising campaign during the early-mid 1990s, the relationship between Harley Davidson and Lorillard soured, with each company filing lawsuits against the other; the result was that Lorillard had the right to continue marketing the cigarettes under the Harley Davidson brand until 2001, however they rebranded them as Maverick in 1998. True is an American brand of cigarettes, currently owned by Reynolds American and manufactured through its subsidiary R.J. Reynolds. The brand was created and formerly owned by the Lorillard Tobacco Company. History True was introduced in September 1966 by Lorillard in 10 major U.S. markets, with national distribution beginning on November 1, 1966. The tagline for the new brand was ''"Shouldn't your brand be True?"''. The cigarette, when first introduced, was full flavored. It was later available in a reduced tar and nicotine version during the 1970s and 1980s. True cigarettes, like Parliament cigarettes, have a recessed filter. ''Old Gold on Broadway'' was a 1927–28 radio series which, beginning in October 1927, broadcast live from inside New York theaters, sponsored by Old Gold Cigarettes. In one of the earliest programs, an excerpt from the ''Ziegfeld Follies'' with Eddie Cantor was heard directly from the stage of the New Amsterdam Theatre The New Amsterdam Theatre is a Broadway theater on 214 West 42nd Street, at the southern end of Times Square, in the Theater District of Manhattan in New York City. One of the oldest surviving Broadway venues, the New Amsterdam was built from .... The program featured a "welcome home" to New York City's Mayor, James J. Walker. Murad (cigarette)
Murad was a brand of cigarettes. History Turkish tobacco is sun-cured, which makes it more aromatic and, like flue-cured tobacco, more acidic than air or smoke-cured tobacco, thus more suitable for cigarette production. In the early 1900s, manufactures of Turkish cigarettes tripled their sales and became legitimate competitors to leading brands. The New York-based Greek tobacconist Soterios Anargyros produced the hand-rolled Murad cigarettes, made of pure Turkish tobacco. Lorillard acquired the Murad brand in 1911 through the dissolution of the Cigarette Trust, explaining the high quality of the Murad advertisements in the following years. Marketing Murad referenced the Oriental roots of their Turkish tobacco blends through pack art and advertising images.
