Lord Rodney
Baron Rodney, of Rodney Stoke in the County of Somerset, is a title in the Peerage of Great Britain. It was created in 1782 for the naval commander Sir George Brydges Rodney, 1st Baronet. He had previously been created a Baronet, of Alresford in the County of Southampton, in the Baronetage of Great Britain on 22 January 1764. His son, the second Baron, represented Northampton in Parliament. He was succeeded by his eldest son, the third Baron. He served as Lord Lieutenant of Radnorshire. His younger brother, the fourth Baron, assumed by Royal licence the additional surname of Harley in 1804. On his death the titles passed to his younger brother, the fifth Baron. He was Rector of Elmley in Kent. He was succeeded by his nephew, the sixth Baron. He was the son of Captain the Hon. Robert Rodney, fourth son of the second Baron. George Rodney, 3rd Baron Rodney
George Rodney, 3rd Baron Rodney (18 June 1782 – 21 June 1842), was a British peer. Rodney was the eldest son of George Rodney, 2nd Baron Rodney, by Anne Harley, daughter and heiress of Thomas Harley. He succeeded his father in the barony in 1802, aged 19, inheriting Old Alresford House. In 1804 he was appointed Lord-Lieutenant of Radnorshire (succeeding his grandfather Thomas Harley), a post he held until his death in 1842. Lord Rodney married Charlotte Georgiana Gould-Morgan, daughter of Sir Charles Morgan, 2nd Baronet, in 1819. There were no children from the marriage. George Brydges Harley Dennett Rodney, 7th Baron Rodney (28 February 1857 - 29 December 1909) was a British Army officer notable for his service in the Egyptian and Nile campaigns of the 1880s. He succeeded his father to the Rodney Barony in 1864 and was succeeded by his son George Bridges Harley Guest Rodney (1891-1973). Life He was a captain in the 1st Life Guards from 1886 to 1888, serving with them in the Egyptian and Nile campaigns before moving to the Reserve of Officers at the same rank in 1889. He exhausted his considerable inherited fortune on bloodstock and gambling. In 1887, his first season as a racehorse owner, he won the St Leger Stakes with Kilwarlin and the Cesarewitch Handicap with Humewood. He attended the Devonshire House Ball of 1897 as King Arthur. Spencer Rodney, 5th Baron Rodney (30 April 1785 – 15 May 1846), was an English peer and clergyman, styled The Honourable Spencer Rodney from 1802 until 1843. Rodney was educated at Westminster School and then matriculated at All Souls College, Oxford, which presented him to the living of Elmley, Kent in 1805. He took his BA from All Souls in 1807 and was elected a Fellow of the College; he later took his MA from All Souls in 1811. Rodney was appointed honorary vicar of Wonastow, Monmouthshire and rector of Luddenham, Kent in 1812. In 1813, he was appointed honorary vicar of Kenchester, Herefordshire. Rodney gave up the rectorate of Elmley in 1818. In 1821, he was appointed vicar of New Romney, Kent. He received his last preferment in 1833, as honorary rector of Chelsfield, Kent. Peerage Of Great Britain
The Peerage of Great Britain comprises all extant peerages created in the Kingdom of Great Britain between the Acts of Union 1707 and the Acts of Union 1800. It replaced the Peerage of England and the Peerage of Scotland, but was itself replaced by the Peerage of the United Kingdom in 1801. The ranks of the Peerage of Great Britain are Duke, Marquess, Earl, Viscount and Baron. Until the passage of the House of Lords Act 1999, all peers of Great Britain could sit in the House of Lords. Some peerages of Great Britain were created for peers in the Peerage of Scotland and Peerage of Ireland as they did not have an automatic seat in the House of Lords until the Peerage Act 1963 which gave Scottish Peers an automatic right to sit in the Lords.
