George Rodney, 3rd Baron Rodney
George Rodney, 3rd Baron Rodney (18 June 1782 – 21 June 1842), was a British peer. Rodney was the eldest son of George Rodney, 2nd Baron Rodney, by Anne Harley, daughter and heiress of Thomas Harley. He succeeded his father in the barony in 1802, aged 19, inheriting Old Alresford House. In 1804 he was appointed Lord-Lieutenant of Radnorshire (succeeding his grandfather Thomas Harley), a post he held until his death in 1842. Lord Rodney married Charlotte Georgiana Gould-Morgan, daughter of Sir Charles Morgan, 2nd Baronet, in 1819. There were no children from the marriage. Thomas Harley (politician, Born 1730)
The Honourable Thomas Harley (24 August 1730 – 1 December 1804) was a British politician who sat in the House of Commons for 41 years from 1761 to 1802. Harley was the fourth son of Edward Harley, 3rd Earl of Oxford and Earl Mortimer and educated at Westminster School. He became an alderman of London, Sheriff of London in 1764 and Lord Mayor of London in 1767. He served as Member of Parliament for London from 1761 to 1774 and then for his native Herefordshire for most of the rest of his life. In 1775 he bought the Berrington estate near Eye, Herefordshire from the Cornewall family and built Berrington Hall in 1778–1781 in place of an older house. It is now classified as a Grade I listed building. He was elected Mayor of Shrewsbury for 1784–85 and appointed Lord Lieutenant of Radnorshire for April 1791 to August 1804. Old Alresford House
Old Alresford House is an 18th-century Georgian country house in Old Alresford, Hampshire, England. It is a Grade II* listed building. It was built between 1749 and 1751 for George Brydges Rodney, 1st Baron Rodney, Admiral Lord Rodney on a gently sloping south facing site between the village churchyard and Alresford Pond, paid for by the riches accrued in a successful naval career fighting the French in the Caribbean. The house is constructed of brick with Bath stone dressings and slated roofs in 3 storeys and a basement. It has a 7-bay frontage with the central 3 bays slightly projecting. There are single bay flanking wings at each end with single storey service wings on both sides at the front forming a courtyard. Rodney purchased Alresford Pond in 1755 before commissioning Richard Woods to create the park in 1764, which is itself now Grade II listed. Lieutenant-Colonel Sir Charles Gould Morgan, 2nd Baronet (4 February 1760 – 5 December 1846), was a Welsh soldier and politician, the MP for Brecon and County of Monmouth. Early career The 2nd baronet was the son of Sir Charles Morgan, 1st Baronet (originally Charles Gould), and Jane Morgan (daughter of Thomas Morgan. His sister Jane married the industrialist Samuel Homfray. He was commissioned ensign and lieutenant in the Coldstream Guards on 21 November 1777, and promoted to lieutenant and captain on 22 March 1781. He was taken prisoner in the capitulation at Yorktown on 19 October. He was promoted captain and lieutenant-colonel on 14 May 1790, retiring from the Army on 4 December 1792. He became an MP for Brecon (1787–1796) and later for the County of Monmouth (1796–1831), supporting the government of Lord Liverpool. Old Alresford
Old Alresford ( or ) is a village and civil parish in Hampshire, England. It is north of the town of New Alresford, northeast of the city of Winchester, and south-west of the town of Alton. In 1851, George Sumner, son of Charles Richard Sumner (Bishop of Winchester), became rector of the parish. There his wife, Mary Sumner, started the Mothers' Union, now a global organisation of Anglican women. The first meetings were held in the rectory, now a conference centre known as Old Alresford Place. In 1986, following the closure of the village school and post office, The Old Alresford Dramatic Society (T.O.A.D.S.) was founded as a way of bringing the village together. They perform a pantomime in December each year and a Spring Show, usually in May. St Mary the Virgin parish church is a brick building dating from the 1750s. John Benn Walsh, 1st Baron Ormathwaite (9 December 1798 – 3 April 1881), known as Sir John Walsh, Bt, between 1825 and 1868, was a British Tory and Conservative Party politician. Early life He was born at Warfield Park, near Bracknell in Berkshire, the only son of Sir John Walsh, 1st Baronet, and Margaret Benn. His mother and father were named Benn but had assumed the surname of Walsh in lieu of his patronymic in 1795, in accordance with the will of his wife's uncle Sir John Walsh (1726–1795), who left him a fortune made in India, including estates in Berkshire and Radnorshire, and also large holdings in Ireland, mainly in Cork and Kerry. Baron Rodney, of Rodney Stoke in the County of Somerset, is a title in the Peerage of Great Britain. It was created in 1782 for the naval commander Sir George Brydges Rodney, 1st Baronet. He had previously been created a Baronet, of Alresford in the County of Southampton, in the Baronetage of Great Britain on 22 January 1764.
