This is a list of people who served as Lord Lieutenant of Brecknockshire. After 1723, all Lord Lieutenants were also Custos Rotulorum of Brecknockshire. The office was abolished on 31 March 1974 and replaced with the Lord Lieutenant of Powys, with Deputy Lieutenants for Brecknockshire. Lord Lieutenant
A lord-lieutenant ( ) is the British monarch's personal representative in each lieutenancy area of the United Kingdom. Historically, each lieutenant was responsible for organising the county's militia. In 1871, the lieutenant's responsibility over the local militia was removed. However, it was not until 1921 that they formally lost the right to call upon able-bodied men to fight when needed. Lord-lieutenant is now an honorary titular position usually awarded to a retired notable person in the county. Origins England and Wales Lieutenants were first appointed to a number of English counties by King Henry VIII in the 1540s, when the military functions of the sheriffs were handed over to them. Each lieutenant raised and was responsible for the efficiency of the local militia units of his county, and afterwards of the yeomanry and volunteers. Charles Morgan, 1st Baron Tredegar
Charles Morgan Robinson Morgan, 1st Baron Tredegar (10 April 1792 – 16 April 1875), was a Welsh Whig peer and a member of the House of Lords. He was the son of Lt.-Col. Sir Charles Morgan, 2nd Baronet, and his wife, the former Mary Margaret Stoney, and was educated at Harrow School, Westminster School and Christ Church, Oxford (1811). He was first elected Member of Parliament (MP) for Brecon in 1812 and was re-elected in 1830 and 1835. He served in the Glamorgan Yeomanry and later in the militia (the Royal Glamorgan Light Infantry, commissioned as Major on 3 April 1849), and was appointed High Sheriff of Monmouthshire for 1821–22 and High Sheriff of Brecknockshire for 1850–51. He was created Baron Tredegar, of Tredegar in the County of Monmouth on 16 April 1859 and was Lord Lieutenant of Brecknockshire from 1866 until his death. He died in April 1875. Sir Charles Dillwyn-Venables-Llewelyn, 2nd Baronet
Sir Charles Leyshon Dillwyn-Venables-Llewelyn, 2nd Baronet (29 June 1870 – 24 June 1951) was a Welsh Conservative Member of Parliament (MP) who briefly represented Radnorshire in the House of Commons and served as Lord-Lieutenant of Radnorshire. Political career Llewelyn was elected Conservative MP for Radnorshire in January 1910 during the hung parliament of that year, but lost the seat in the election in December. He inherited the baronetcy on the death of his father in 1927. He was Lord-Lieutenant of Radnorshire from 1929 to 1949 and High Sheriff of Radnorshire in 1924. Following his 1893 marriage to Katherine Minna, daughter of Richard Lister Venables, the Llysdinam estate came into the family and Sir Charles assumed the additional surname of Venables. John Andrew Doyle
John Andrew Doyle, DL (14 May 1844 – 4 August 1907) was an English historian, the son of Andrew Doyle, editor of ''The Morning Chronicle''. He was educated at Eton and at Balliol College, Oxford, winning the Arnold prize in 1868 for his essay, ''The American Colonies'' and elected President of the Oxford Union in 1870. He was a fellow of All Souls from 1870 until his death, which occurred at Crickhowell, Wales, on 4 August 1907. He inherited the estate of his grandfather Sir John Easthope, 1st Baronet. Captain Henry Adelbert Wellington FitzRoy Somerset, 9th Duke of Beaufort JP, DL (19 May 1847 – 24 November 1924), styled Earl of Glamorgan until 1853 and Marquess of Worcester between 1853 and 1899, was a British peer. Background and education Beaufort was the son of Henry Somerset, 8th Duke of Beaufort. He was educated at Eton College between 1860 and 1864. Military service and public appointments Beaufort became a cornet in 1865 in the Royal Horse Guards and was promoted to captain in 1869. Henry Fleming Lea Devereux, 14th Viscount Hereford PC (9 February 1777 – 31 May 1843) was a British Tory politician. He served as Captain of the Honourable Corps of Gentlemen-at-Arms between 1827 and 1830 and again between 1834 and 1835. Background and education Devereux was the son of George Devereux, 13th Viscount Hereford, and Marianna Devereux. His maternal grandfather was George Deveraux, of Tregoyd, a distant relation to the line of his father. He was educated at Winchester and Trinity College, Oxford. Political career Devereux succeeded his father in the viscountcy in 1804 and took his seat on the Tory benches in the House of Lords. Sir William Lorenzo Parker, 3rd Baronet (9 January 1889 – 27 October 1971) was a British rower who competed in the 1912 Summer Olympics. Parker was born in Kensington London. He inherited the baronetcy on the death of Sir William Biddulph Parker, 2nd Baronet on 23 January 1902. He was educated at New College, Oxford. He was a member of the New College eight which won the silver medal for Great Britain rowing at the 1912 Summer Olympics. Geoffrey Raikes
Major General Sir Geoffrey Taunton Raikes, (7 April 1884 – 27 March 1975) was a British Army general who achieved high office in the 1930s. Military career Educated at Radley College and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, Raikes was commissioned into the South Wales Borderers in 1903. He was seconded to the Egyptian Army from 1913 to 1915. He served in the First World War and in April 1918 found himself as Commanding Officer of the 2nd Battalion, South Wales Borderers at Armentières, where the battalion suffered heavy losses. After the war, Raikes became an Instructor at the Senior Officers School in 1922 before attending the Staff College, Camberley from 1924 to 1925 and moving on to be Chief Instructor of Military History and Tactics at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. Wilfred Bailey, 3rd Baron Glanusk
Wilfred Russell Bailey, 3rd Baron Glanusk (27 June 1891 – 12 January 1948), was a British peer and soldier. Glanusk was the son of Joseph Bailey, 2nd Baron Glanusk, and succeeded his father as third Baron in 1928. He achieved the rank of colonel in the Grenadier Guards and also served as Lord Lieutenant of Brecknockshire from 1928 to 1948. On 27 February 1919, while still Wilfred Bailey, Glanusk married firstly Victoria Mary Enid Ann Dugdale, a daughter of Colonel Frank Dugdale and Eva Sarah Louise Greville. They were divorced in 1939. On 17 March 1942 he married secondly Margaret Eldrydd Shoubridge, daughter of Major-General Herbert Shoubridge. They had a daughter, Elizabeth Shân Josephine Bailey (born 10 September 1943).
