Loranger, Louisiana
Loranger (pronounced Lo-RAHN-jer) is an unincorporated community in Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana, United States. Loranger is located East of Hammond, Louisiana, at the junction of LA 40 and LA 1062. The Loranger Elementary School, Loranger Middle School, and Loranger High School each serve a wide geographic range of families living in and around the very rural Loranger area. The Loranger School District is bordered by the school districts of Folsom, Amite, Independence, and Hammond. Historic places The Loranger Methodist Church was built in 1915 and was lit by kerosene lanterns with a stable behind the church to accommodate horses. During the Great Depression the basement was used to teach the villagers how to preserve food. The Zemurray Gardens Lodge Complex is a 171-acre garden full of azalea, camellia and dogwood trees. Loranger Methodist Church
Loranger Methodist Church, formerly at Allman Avenue and Magnolia Boulevard in Loranger, Louisiana, was built in 1915. It was added to the National Register in 1982. It was delisted, however, in 2015. The church was built in 1915 and was lit by kerosene lanterns with a stable behind the church to accommodate horses. During the Great Depression the basement was used to teach the villagers how to preserve food. It is a three-story building amidst a modern Loranger school complex, with a bungalow-style porch and a square belltower with a distinctive spreading pyramid roof. It was built of Louisiana Longleaf Yellow Pine donated by the Genesee Lumber Company, which donated lumber for another church and a school (neither of which survive), as part of making the area more attractive for in-migration of workers for the company. Rusty Chambers
Russell Francis "Rusty" Chambers (November 10, 1953 – July 1, 1981) was an American football linebacker. He played for the Tulane Green Wave in college and professionally for the New Orleans Saints and Miami Dolphins of the National Football League. Chambers led the Dolphins in tackles for two consecutive years. His career was tragically cut short at the age of 27 when he died in a car accident on July 1, 1981. Zemurray Gardens Lodge Complex
The Zemurray Gardens Lodge Complex, in Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana near Loranger, Louisiana, was built around 1925. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. History The earliest record held in Tangipahoa Parish describes an act of sale in the year 1822 as ''"the section of land on which Nathan Joiner now lives and was originally settled by Thomas Joiner."'' The Joiner family are believed to have first settled the property sometime in the 1790s. Further records from the Tangipahoa parish courthouse show that a man named Alfred Hennen purchased the Zemurray property sometime in 1828, in two different land sales, one 640-acre piece was purchased from William Cooper and another 640-acre plot from Moses Moore. The Hennen family built a large home on the property and is believed to be the source of the present structure.
