Longley Covered Bridge
The Longley Covered Bridge, also known as the Harnois Covered Bridge, is a wooden covered bridge that crosses the Trout River in Montgomery, Vermont on Longley Bridge Road. Built in 1863, this Town lattice truss bridge is the oldest of a group of area bridges built by brothers Sheldon & Savannah Jewett. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. The bridge is closed to traffic, and has been bypassed by an adjacent temporary bridge. Description and history The Longley Covered Bridge is located in a rural area northwest of the village center of Montgomery, on Longley Bridge Road just west of its junction with Vermont Route 118. It crosses the Trout River in an east–west orientation, resting on abutments of stone and concrete. The bridge consists of flanking Town lattice trusses long. Trout River (Vermont)
The Trout River is a tributary of the Missisquoi River, flowing successively in municipalities of Montgomery, in Enosburg and in East Berkshire, in Franklin County, in northern Vermont in the United States. The Trout River Valley is served by North Main Street (VT 118) passing on the northeast bank of the river. While the upper part is served by Jay Mountain Road (route 242) (north side of the river) and by Hazens Notch Road (route 58) on the south side. The surface of the Trout River is generally frozen from mid-December to mid-March, with the exception of the rapids; however, safe circulation on the ice generally takes place from late December to early March. Montgomery is a town in Franklin County, Vermont, United States. The population as of the 2020 census was 1,184. In 1963, part of Avery's Gore in Franklin County became part of Montgomery, with the other section becoming part of Belvidere in Lamoille County. Geography The town is in eastern Franklin County, bordered to the south by Lamoille County and to the east by Orleans County. Vermont Route 118 passes through the town, leading northwest to Berkshire and south to Eden. Vermont Route 58 intersects Route 118 at Montgomery Center, leading southwest over Hazens Notch to Lowell.
