Fairfield is a town in Franklin County, Vermont, United States, chartered in 1763. The population was 2,044 at the 2020 census. President Chester A. Arthur was born in Fairfield in 1829, and lived there for the first three years of his life. A replica of his home, the Chester Alan Arthur State Historic Site, is open seasonally. Geography Fairfield occupies central Franklin County, east of St. Albans. Vermont Route 36 crosses the town from east to west. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , of which is land and , or 1.61%, is water. The town is drained by Black Creek, a north-flowing tributary of the Missisquoi River. Fairfield Pond is in the town's northwest corner. Geography Berkshire is located in northeastern Franklin County. Its northern boundary is the Canada–United States border. The highway, which lies within Richford in northern Franklin County, has a length of from VT 105 north to the Canada–United States border. VT 139 provides access to the Richford–Abercorn Border Crossing, from which the highway continues as Quebec Route 139. Swanton (town), Vermont
Swanton is a town in Franklin County, Vermont, United States. The population was 6,701 at the 2020 census. The town includes the village of Swanton. History The town of Swanton was chartered in 1763 as one of the New Hampshire Grants by Benning Wentworth, the governor of the Province of New Hampshire. It was named for Captain William Swanton, an officer in the British Army who had traveled through the area during the French and Indian War. There were French land grants in the area beginning in 1734, and small French settlements including a Catholic mission in what is now Swanton from as early as 1740, when settlers in Quebec used a water route from Quebec City and Montreal to reach the banks of the Missisquoi River near what are now known as Swanton Falls. Swanton is a village in the town of Swanton in Franklin County, Vermont, United States. It is sometimes called Swanton Village to distinguish it from the surrounding town of the same name. The population was 2,328 at the 2020 census. It was founded in 1888. Geography Swanton village is located in the north-central part of the town of Swanton, along the Missisquoi River. U.S. Route 7 passes through the village as Grand Avenue, Canada Street, and Spring Street.
