Long Wharf (Portland, Maine)
Long Wharf is a historic wharf in Portland, Maine, on the edge of the Fore River. It stands across Commercial Street, between Market Street and Moulton Street and, on the waterfront side, between Portland Pier (to the north) and Chandler's Wharf (to the south). Portland Lobster Company stands at the foot of the wharf, at Commercial Street, while DiMillo's On the Water is a floating restaurant located on a boat moored at the wharf. Sections of the former Berlin Wall stands on the southern side of the wharf, near today's Gorham Savings Bank. Fore River (Maine)
The Fore River is a short horn-shaped estuary, approximately long, separating Portland and South Portland in Maine in the United States. Many of the port facilities of the Portland harbor are along the estuary, which is formed just southwest of Portland by the confluence of several creeks. The estuary was initially known as Levett's River, so named by the first English settler of the Casco Bay region, Capt. Christopher Levett. But shortly afterwards, the estuary came to have the name by which it is known today. The Stroudwater River flows into the Fore River estuary. The Cumberland and Oxford Canal connected the estuary with Sebago Lake via the Stroudwater River from 1832 through 1870. The estuary enters Casco Bay on the southeast edge of Portland. DiMillo's On The Water
DiMillo's On the Water is a floating restaurant in Portland, Maine, United States. It is located on the former ''New York'' car ferry, which ran between Norfolk and Hampton, Virginia, then between Newport and Jamestown, Rhode Island. It is now permanently berthed at Portland's Long Wharf. The vessel is long, wide, and weighs 700 tons. The DiMillo family also owns the marina that surrounds the vessel. History The restaurant was established in 1982 by Tony DiMillo (1933–1999), who reused the name of his previous business, a lobster restaurant located on the opposite side of Commercial Street. DiMillo's Lobster House opened in 1965. DiMillo's slogan, "The clams you eat here today slept last night in Casco Bay", was kept.
