Long Beach is a city in Los Angeles County, California. It is the 42nd-most populous city in the United States, with a population of 466,742 as of 2020. A charter city, Long Beach is the seventh-most populous city in California. Incorporated in 1897, Long Beach lies in Southern California in the southern part of Los Angeles County. Long Beach is approximately south of downtown Los Angeles, and is part of the Gateway Cities region. The Port of Long Beach is the second busiest container port in the United States and is among the world's largest shipping ports. The city is over an oilfield with minor wells both directly beneath the city as well as offshore. Area code 562 is a California telephone area code that was split from area code 310 on January 25, 1997. It is the area code for much of southeastern Los Angeles County, including Long Beach, and parts of northern Orange County. History Prior to November 2, 1991; this region had been part of area code 213. On that date, most of the western and southern portions of the old 213 region became area code 310. The Long Beach City Council is the governing body of the City of Long Beach, California. The council is composed of 9 members elected from single-member districts for four-year terms. The Mayor is the chief legislative officer of the City and has the power to veto actions of the City Council, presides at meetings of the City Council, and has no vote, but may participate fully in the deliberations and proceedings of the City Council. Every two years, at the same time that Council members regularly take office for new terms, the Council selects one of its members to be the Vice-Mayor.
