London Hockey League
The London Hockey League, also known as the Higgins Group London Hockey League, is a men's field hockey league based in London and the South of England. It was established in 1969. League Structure The men's league has seven divisions (Premier Division to Division six). There is also a Vets league and a Super Vets league, each with two divisions. Each league has a related cup competition. Field hockey is a team sport structured in standard hockey format, in which each team plays with ten outfield players and a goalkeeper. Teams must drive a round hockey ball by hitting it with a hockey stick towards the rival team's shooting circle and then into the goal. The match is won by the team that scores the most goals. Matches are played on grass, watered turf, artificial turf, synthetic field, or indoor boarded surface. The stick is made of wood, carbon fibre, fibreglass, or a combination of carbon fibre and fibreglass in different quantities. The stick has two sides; one rounded and one flat; only the flat face of the stick is allowed to progress the ball. During play, goalkeepers are the only players allowed to touch the ball with any part of their body. A player's hand is considered part of the stick if holding the stick. The Men's England Hockey League is a field hockey league organized by England Hockey that features men's teams from England and Wales. Format Regular season There are 62 teams in the league, the top tier consists of a Premier Division of twelve teams. Below this is tier two, which consists of two ten-team Division One regional teams (North and South). The third tier consists of three regional conferences North, West, and East, all consisting of ten teams. The teams play each other home and away during an 18 week season from September to April. The league has a winter break between December and February. The winners of the Premier Division regular season automatically qualify to play in the Euro Hockey League. Reading Hockey Club is a field hockey club based at Sonning Lane in the English town of Reading. It is one of the most successful clubs in the United Kingdom with National League and Cup honours. The Men's First Team play in the Men's England Hockey League and the Ladies 1st XI team play in the Women's England Hockey League. Southgate Hockey Club is a field hockey club based at Southgate Hockey Centre in Trent Park, near Oakwood in London. The men's 1st XI play in the Men's England Hockey League. The club has 9 men's sides, 5 ladies' sides and a large junior section. History The club was formed in 1886. Matches were initially played in Broomfield Park, Palmers Green; in 1890 the club relocated to the Walker Ground on Waterfall Road. In order to meet the challenge created by the introduction of artificial grass pitches, the club began hiring pitches away from the Walker Ground from around 1985. After a search for a new location, the club relocated to Southgate Hockey Centre during the 1997/98 season.
