Loen, Norway
Loen is a village in Stryn Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. It is located in the inner part of the Nordfjord region, at the easternmost end of the Nordfjorden. Loen is located about north of the village of Olden and about southeast of the municipal center of Stryn. The lake Lovatnet is located just to the southeast of the village of Loen. The Hotel Alexandra was established in Loen in 1884. The historic Loen Church is also located in the village. History Loen is the home to some of the oldest farms in Norway: ''Sæten'' (Setin), ''Tjugen'' (Tyfin), and ''Loen''. They were probably established long before the time of Christianity. Much of the upper Loen valley was devastated from two rockfall slides (one in 1905 and one in 1936) that created huge waves that swept with them most of the houses and vegetation. Lovatnet
Lovatnet (also Loenvatnet) is a lake in the municipality of Stryn in Vestland county, Norway. It is located about southeast of the village of Loen and about east of the village of Olden. The lake lies just southwest of the mountain Skåla. The water from the lake flows down from the mountains; especially from the Jostedalsbreen and Tindefjellbreen glaciers. It then flows out through the Loelva river into the Nordfjorden. Water from the tiered horsetail waterfall Ramnefjellsfossen with a total height of 818m flows into the lake from a short distance away, by some criteria among the highest dozen waterfalls in the world. It is fed by meltwater from the glacier Ramnefjellbreen, an arm of the Jostedalsbreen glacier. Loen Skylift
Loen Skylift is an aerial tramway in Loen in Stryn, Norway. The cable car climbs to the top of Mount Hoven, above the Nordfjord. The maximum speed is . With a gradient up to 60°, it is one of the steepest in the world. The average is 45°. The gondola car is above ground at the highest. It is the first aerial tramway installed in Norway since Hangursbanen in 1963. Jostedalsbreen National Park
Jostedalsbreen National Park ( no, Jostedalsbreen nasjonalpark) is a national park in Norway that encompasses the largest glacier on the European mainland, Jostedalsbreen. Jostedalsbreen nasjonalparksenter is a visitors center in the village of Oppstryn in the municipality of Stryn in Vestland county, Norway. The center is east of the villages of Loen and Olden, on the shore of the lake Oppstrynsvatn. The mountain Skåla and the glaciers Briksdalsbreen and Jostedalsbreen are to the southwest of this visitor's center. Jostedalsbreen nasjonalparksenter is one of the three visitor's centers in Jostedalsbreen National Park. The center is owned by a private foundation. Prime Minister Gro Harlem Brundtland officiated at the formal opening of the center on 19 June 1993, although it was opened to the public in 1992. The main building at the centre was constructed in a manner similar to Viking long houses where pillars rather than the walls are supporting the roof. Loen Church
Loen Church ( no, Loen kyrkje or ) is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Stryn Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. It is located in the village of Loen. It is the church for the Loen parish which is part of the Nordfjord prosti ( deanery) in the Diocese of Bjørgvin. The white, wooden church was built in an octagonal design in 1838 using plans drawn up by an unknown architect. The church seats about 190 people. There are two stone pillars in the churchyard that memorialize the local residents who died in 1905 and 1936 when the rock slides from the mountain Ramnefjellet caused tsunamis which flooded many farms surrounding the lake Lovatnet.
