''Lobosculum'' is a genus (or a subgenus under ''Polygyra'') of small air-breathing land snails, terrestrial pulmonate gastropod molluscs in the family Polygyridae. Shell description These are among the smallest snails in the Polygyridae, with shell diameters of about 4 to 6 mm (approximately 1/5 inch). The shells of this species usually have a velvety surface, as a consequence of numerous hair-like extensions of the surface covering of the shell, the periostracum. Gastropod Shell
The gastropod shell is part of the body of a Gastropoda, gastropod or snail, a kind of mollusc. The shell is an exoskeleton, which protects from predators, mechanical damage, and dehydration, but also serves for muscle attachment and calcium storage. Periostracum
The periostracum ( ) is a thin, organic coating (or "skin") that is the outermost layer of the shell of many shelled animals, including molluscs and brachiopods. Among molluscs, it is primarily seen in snails and clams, i.e. in gastropods and bivalves, but it is also found in cephalopods such as ''Allonautilus scrobiculatus''.
