Lloyd MacPhail
Robert Lloyd George MacPhail, (March 22, 1920 – July 2, 1995) was a Canadian politician and the 23rd Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward Island. Born in New Haven, Prince Edward Island, the son of Robert Archibald MacPhail and Catherine C. MacLean, he was first elected in a 1961 by-election to the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island as the Prince Edward Island Progressive Conservative Party candidate in the district of 2nd Queens. He was re-elected in 1962, 1966, 1970, 1974, 1978, 1979 and 1982. He held many cabinet positions including: Minister of Industry and Natural Resources and of Tourism Development (1965–1966), Minister of Finance (1979–1981), Chairman of the Treasury Board (1979–1981), and Minister of Development (1979–1980). Joseph Aubin Doiron
Joseph Aubin Doiron, (June 10, 1922 – January 29, 1995) was the 22nd Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward Island from 1980 to 1985, becoming the province's second Acadian to hold this position. Doiron was born in North Rustico in 1922. Following his early education in local schools, he went on to receive his B.A. from Sainte-Anne's College in Nova Scotia and his D.D.S from the Université de Montréal in 1951. He was married to Rose Bernice Gallant of Duvar, PEI, and together they had seven children. Before his appointment as Lieutenant-Governor, Doiron practiced dentistry in Summerside. Aubin Doiron was appointed Lieutenant-Governor of Prince Edward Island on January 14, 1980. The Progressive Conservative Party of Prince Edward Island is one of three major political parties on Prince Edward Island. The party and its rival, the Liberals, have alternated in power since responsible government was granted in 1851. History The policies of the Liberals and Progressive Conservatives (PCs) are very similar. The major differences are in their allegiances to federal parties and in personalities. The 1982 Prince Edward Island general election was held on September 27, 1982. In 1981, after just two years as premier, Angus MacLean resigned his position after the election of James Lee to the Progressive Conservative leadership. 1979 Prince Edward Island General Election
The 1979 Prince Edward Island general election was held on April 23, 1979. The election was held just one year after the 1978 election, which featured a 17–15 split in MLAs in the legislature. Following the resignation of former premier Alex Campbell from his seat, the Legislature was in a 15–15 tie in voting members (the Liberal Speaker, Russell Perry, could not cast active votes in his role), the new Premier Bennett Campbell decided to call an election in an effort to regain his lost majority. The gambit failed, and instead the Progressive Conservatives led by Angus MacLean formed a strong majority government. 1966 Prince Edward Island General Election
The 1966 Prince Edward Island general election was held on May 30, 1966. The election in the riding of 1st Kings was delayed until July 11, 1966 due to the death of Liberal Assemblyman and candidate William Acorn. As it turned out, other ridings elected a total of 15 Liberals and 15 Progressive Conservatives, and the riding of 1st Kings would by itself decide the general election. The outgoing Progressive Conservative government attempted to win 1st Kings by resorting to such methods as naming one of the PC candidates (Keith Mackenzie) as Minister of Transports, and paving 30 miles of road in the district. At the time, a reporter from the Charlottetown Guardian commented on how "the riding may well sink under the weight of the avingmachines".
