Liz Lorrimer
Wendy Elizabeth Lorrimer (née Pickering; born 1946) is a retired rower who competed for Great Britain. Rowing career Lorrimer first started rowing at Durham University in 1965 and was the first female member of the Leicester Rowing Club. While attending Cambridge University she won the 1969 boat race and married Tony Lorrimer in Leicester during the same year. A move to Gloucester was followed by another to Nottingham where she became the first female member of the Nottingham Rowing Club as well. She became a double British champion in 1974 when winning the double sculls with Lorraine Baker and the quadruple sculls at the 1974 British Rowing Championships. Cambridge University Women's Boat Club
Cambridge University Women's Boat Club (CUWBC) was the rowing club for women at the University of Cambridge. CUWBC fielded both a lightweight eight that races against Oxford at the Henley Boat Races, and two openweight eights that race at the Women's Boat Race. In April 2020 it was agreed that the club would be combined with the men's club CUBC and the lightweight men's club CULRC. History Early days of the club Women began rowing on the River Cam in the 19th century, mainly from Newnham College Boat Club, but only on a recreational level. Newnham competed against the Oxford University Women's Boat Club (OUWBC) from 1927 until 1939. Leicester Rowing Club is a rowing and sculling club in Leicester. The club was formed in 1882 and represents the City of Leicester in Regatta and Head Races around Great Britain and Worldwide. Nottingham Rowing Club is a rowing club in West Bridgford, Nottingham. The club was formed in 2006 as a merger of the Nottingham Boat Club and the Nottingham Britannia Rowing Club, two historic rowing clubs that were established in 1894 and 1869 respectively. Since the merger of the two clubs, the NRC has incorporated the former Nottingham Schools Rowing Association and the Nottinghamshire County Rowing Association. The Boat Race 1969
The 115th Boat Race took place on 5 April 1969. Held annually, it is a side-by-side rowing race between crews from the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge along the River Thames. The race featured the heaviest oarsman in the history of the event in Cambridge's David Cruttenden. It was won by Cambridge who passed the finishing post four lengths ahead of Oxford, securing Cambridge's second consecutive victory. The winning time of 18 minutes 4 seconds was the third fastest in modern Boat Race history. In the reserve race, Goldie beat Isis, and in the Women's Boat Race, Cambridge were victorious. Lorraine Baker (rower)
Lorraine M Baker (married name Prince; born 1956) is a retired rower who competed for Great Britain. Rowing career Baker first started rowing at Derby Rowing Club aged 15, she began in a pair with Sue North, the Derby captain before moving into a four in 1973. She became a double British champion in 1974 when winning the double sculls with Liz Lorrimer and the quadruple sculls at the 1974 British Rowing Championships. She was consequently selected by Great Britain for the 1974 World Rowing Championships in Lucerne which was the inaugural championships for women. Competing in the quadruple sculls event the crew were eliminated during the heats. The 1974 World Rowing Championships was the fourth World Rowing Championships. It was held from 4 to 8 September 1974 (for men) and from 29 August to 1 September 1974 (for women) on the Rotsee in Lucerne, Switzerland. The event was significantly extended from the 1970 edition, with the addition of both women's and lightweight men's events. Six women boat classes were added, three lightweight men classes, plus quad scull for men, increasing the number of boat classes from seven in 1970 to seventeen in 1974. This was also the last World Championships held on a quadrennial cycle – from this point, World Championships were held annually.
