Live Phish Volume 16
''Live Phish Vol. 16'' is a live album by Vermont-based jam band Phish released on October 29, 2002. It was recorded live at Thomas and Mack Center located on the campus of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, in Paradise, Nevada on Halloween night, 1998. It marks the fourth Halloween show in which Phish dressed up in a " musical costume" by performing an album from another artist in its entirety. On this night, the band unveiled a complete performance of the Velvet Underground's '' Loaded'' sandwiched in between two sets of Phish's own music. This performance is the only Halloween performance that sees Phish straying away from the album's original format, instead embarking on several extended improvisational jams throughout the set. Phish
Phish is an American rock band formed in Burlington, Vermont, in 1983. The band is known for musical improvisation, extended jams, blending of genres, and a dedicated fan base. The band consists of guitarist Trey Anastasio, bassist Mike Gordon, drummer Jon Fishman, and keyboardist Page McConnell, all of whom perform vocals, with Anastasio being the lead vocalist. The band was formed by Anastasio, Gordon, Fishman and guitarist Jeff Holdsworth, who were joined by McConnell in 1985. Holdsworth departed the band in 1986, and the lineup has remained stable since. Phish began to perform outside of New England in the late 1980s and experienced a rise in popularity in the mid 1990s. Ernest Joseph "Trey" Anastasio III (born September 30, 1964) is an American guitarist, singer, and songwriter, best known as the lead guitarist of the rock band Phish, which he co-founded in 1983. He is credited by name as composer of 152 Phish original songs, 141 of them as a solo credit, in addition to 41 credits attributed to the band as a whole. In addition to his work with Phish, Anastasio has released 11 solo albums, and been part of several side projects including the Trey Anastasio Band, Oysterhead, Ghosts of the Forest, Phil Lesh and Friends, and Surrender to the Air. The Thomas & Mack Center is a multi-purpose arena located on the campus of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in Paradise, Nevada. It is home of the UNLV Runnin' Rebels basketball team of the Mountain West Conference. History The facility was first opened in the summer of 1983. "Ghost" is a song from Phish's 1998 studio album ''The Story of the Ghost'', in the key of A minor, Dorian mode. The lyrics of this song relate to the narrator's encounter with a ghost. Live versions of "Ghost" are known to be considerably lengthy, as seen in such versions as 1997-07-01, 1997-07-03, 1997-07-23, and 2003-08-03, all of which are above 20 minutes, the latter clocking in at a length of 31:47. Other versions of "Ghost" generally range from 10 to 26 minutes. The studio version of the song, however, clocks in at a mere 3 minutes and 52 seconds. ''Loaded'' is the fourth studio album by American rock band The Velvet Underground, released in November 1970 by Atlantic Records' subsidiary label Cotillion. Despite having a number of singles originate from it, the album itself failed to chart. It was the final album recorded featuring founding member and main songwriter Lou Reed, who left shortly before its release. Other founding members Sterling Morrison and Maureen Tucker would leave in 1971. For this reason, it is often considered by fans to be the "last" Velvet Underground album. New Age (The Velvet Underground Song)
"New Age" is the fifth song on The Velvet Underground album '' Loaded'' (1970). It is one of the four songs that feature Doug Yule on vocals, encouraged by main singer and songwriter Lou Reed. The song also appears on '' 1969: The Velvet Underground Live'', with Reed on vocals, singing an earlier, significantly different version of the lyrics. In its original form, it was about Reed's girlfriend at the time, Shelley Albin, and included a possible reference to Reed's bisexuality: "It seems to be my fancy to make it with Frank and Nancy." The later, studio version is written from the point of view of a fan addressing a "fat blonde actress". When the album was released, this song caused controversy.
