Chalk Dust Torture
"Chalk Dust Torture" is a 1992 song by the American band Phish. It is the thirteenth track from their 1992 album ''A Picture of Nectar'' and was also released as their first promotional single by Elektra Records. The song is a riff-based, fast-paced rock song written by Phish guitarist and lead vocalist Trey Anastasio and lyricist Tom Marshall. The studio recording features a lowered pitch effect on Anastasio's lead vocal. History The main guitar riff for the song originated in the fall of 1990 on a track called "Self." Recorded in studio in August 1991 (and later released in 1994 on '' Crimes of the Mind)'', it featured a collaboration between Phish and their longtime friend, The Dude of Life (aka, Steve Pollak). The song was re-worked and included in the recording sessions for ''A Picture of Nectar.'' In addition to the CD single, the track was also released as an unedited LP to radio stations. Played at over a quarter of their live shows, band members have taken a part ...

''Live Phish Vol. 17'' was recorded live at Portland Meadows in Portland, Oregon, on July 15, 1998. It was the first of a series of four concerts picked by Mike Gordon to release. Except for Live Phish Volume 20, the releases include his journal entries about the shows in the booklet. This was the first concert on the band's US leg of their 1998 summer tour. The bonus track is a very popular version of "Bathtub Gin" recorded live at the Riverport Amphitheater in Maryland Heights, Missouri, a suburb of St. Louis. Live Phish Volume 16
''Live Phish Vol. 16'' is a live album by Vermont-based jam band Phish released on October 29, 2002. It was recorded live at Thomas and Mack Center located on the campus of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, in Paradise, Nevada on Halloween night, 1998. It marks the fourth Halloween show in which Phish dressed up in a " musical costume" by performing an album from another artist in its entirety. On this night, the band unveiled a complete performance of the Velvet Underground's '' Loaded'' sandwiched in between two sets of Phish's own music. This performance is the only Halloween performance that sees Phish straying away from the album's original format, instead embarking on several extended improvisational jams throughout the set. Two of the album's songs - "Lonesome Cowboy Bill" and "Sweet Jane" - had already been performed by Phish in concert. The group later admitted that they could not fully decide on a choice for the 1998 Halloween album so they decided to go with an albu ...

Live Phish Volume 8
''Live Phish Vol. 8'' was recorded live at the E Centre in Camden, New Jersey, a suburb of Philadelphia, on July 10, 1999. This show is known specifically for the superlative version of "Chalk Dust Torture," which guitarist Trey Anastasio has referred to as one of the greatest Phish jams of all time. Upon hearing the song, drummer Jon Fishman lobbied for this show release as part of the Live Phish Series. Much like ''Live Phish Volume 5'', fan reaction was mixed upon the show's release, as many felt the concert was released primarily for the version of "Chalk Dust Torture" and that the rest of the show was only fairly average for 1999, a year punctuated by numerous standout shows. Aside from the album's most famous jam, the highly regarded first set includes a cover of jazz-organist Jimmy Smith's funky instrumental "Back at the Chicken Shack." In the second set the band heads into deep funk territory during a twenty-minute "Tweezer" and closes the show with a cover of The Beatle ...

Live Phish Volume 7
''Live Phish Vol. 7'' was recorded live at the World Music Theater in Tinley Park, Illinois, United States, on August 14, 1993. Almost immediately, this concert became a sought after collectors item on the Phish bootleg circuit, as it seemed to define an era when Phish began breaking down many of its live performance boundaries. Whereas most shows before 1993 contained a distinct set of songs with specifically placed jams, many concerts in the summer of 1993 saw Phish experimenting with song segues and improvisation within sections of songs that were once tightly structured. Here, the band floats in and out of "Run Like an Antelope" through most of the second set, switching from on-the-spot instrumental forays to unique and rare cover songs, all within the context of "Run Like an Antelope." Shortly after a massive jam session in "You Enjoy Myself," drummer Jon Fishman provides a bit of comic relief with a performance of Prince's " Purple Rain." Track listing Disc one :''Set one: ...

Live Phish Volume 6
''Live Phish Vol. 6'' was recorded live on the first night of a three night stand at the Worcester Centrum in Worcester, Massachusetts, on November 27, 1998. The show is best known for its repeated relapses into the classic Surfaris favorite " Wipeout," which made two appearances by itself during the concert and one during the middle of "Weekapaug Groove." The band was extremely loose and playful on this night, launching into a spontaneous version of The English Beat's 1980 ska hit "Mirror in the Bathroom" while still in the middle of "Chalk Dust Torture," and also breaking out the only blues version of "Dog Log" in the song's history. Also, the band extended the ending of "Weekapaug Groove" into its own individual jam, resulting in the entire "Weekapaug Groove" segment clocking in at over twenty minutes. This concert remains one of Phish's most popular performances from the 1998 fall tour. ''Live Phish Vol. 6'' marked the first time that "Runaway Jim" had appeared on an offici ...
