Little Stony Creek (North Fork Shenandoah River)
Little Stony Creek is a 6.8 mile long river in the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests in the Commonwealth of Virginia. It is a first-order tributary of the North Fork Shenandoah River and the Potomac River. Physical description The headwater of Little Stony Creek is at an altitude of about 3,000 feet, in a ravine between Sugar Knob and Mill Mountain, a few hundred feet from the Virginia-West Virginia border, about three miles northeast of Big Schloss. West End Reservoir At River Mile 1.9, Little Stony Creek is dammed by the West End Reservoir Dam (Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation inventory number 17104 / Army Corps of Engineers National Inventory of Dams ID number VA17104). Big Schloss
Big Schloss is a peak in the Great North Mountain range of the Ridge and Valley Appalachians, with an elevation of . The peak is located in George Washington National Forest on the border of Virginia and West Virginia, though according to Topozone, the actual summit is in Virginia. The trail is part of the Lee Ranger District. It features a rocky outcropping of white sandstone with expansive views into Trout Run Valley in West Virginia and Little Schloss Mountain in Virginia. German settlers gave Big Schloss its name. Schloss is German for "castle", and the name is a reference to the rocky outcrop. German was the common language in the area for several years. A number of hiking trails lead to Big Schloss. Hikers may ascend from Wolf Gap Recreation Area via the Mill Mountain trail, or a circuit hike coming from FDR Rt. 92. Woodstock, Virginia
Woodstock is a town and the county seat of Shenandoah County, Virginia, United States. It has a population of 5,212 according to the 2017 census. Woodstock comprises 3.2 square miles of incorporated area of the town, and is located along the "Seven Bends" of the north fork of the Shenandoah River. While some tourism references list Woodstock as the fourth oldest town in Virginia, the area was sparsely settled and perhaps platted in 1752 or shortly thereafter, but the town was actually established by charter in 1761. A river mile is a measure of distance in miles along a river from its mouth. River mile numbers begin at zero and increase further upstream.
