Little Nottoway River
The Little Nottoway River is a long tributary to the Nottoway River in the United States state of Virginia. Located in the southeastern part of the state, it is part of the larger Chowan-Albemarle drainage. Course The Little Nottoway River starts at the confluence of Carys Creek and Mallorys Creek in the Piedmont of Virginia at an elevation of 340 feet. It then flows roughly southeast to meet the Nottoway River at an elevation of 225 feet. Excepting the forming tributaries, it has four streams running into it. Watershed The Little Nottoway River watershed is roughly half forested and half-open land. Tributaries River modifications Crystal Lake on Lazaretto Creek is the only named impoundment in the watershed. Horsepen Creek is a long tributary to the Little Nottoway River in the United States state of Virginia. Located in the south-central part of the state, it is part of the larger Chowan-Albemarle drainage. The watershed is 66% forested and 32% agricultural with the rest of land as other uses. Course Horsepen Creek rises about 0.1 miles east of Winnie, Virginia on the Nottoway River divide in Nottoway County. The creek then flows southeast and east through Lake Amtoco to meet the Little Nottoway River about 2 miles southwest of Blackstone. Crewe, Virginia
Crewe is a town in Nottoway County, Virginia, United States. The population was 2,326 at the 2010 census. History Crewe was founded in 1888 as a central location to house steam locomotive repair shops for the Norfolk & Western Railroad (now called Norfolk Southern) which has a rail yard there for east–west trains carrying Appalachian coal to Hampton Roads for export abroad, and the street pattern was laid out at that time. It was named for the large railroad town of Crewe, England. The railroad repair facility's importance diminished sharply in the 1950s, as the switch to diesel-electric locomotives required less labor and equipment. Crewe has a small railroad museum. Lottie Moon, a noted Baptist missionary to China, is buried in the town cemetery. A chicken festival is held annually on the third Wednesday in June, as well as the town Homecoming Celebration on the third weekend in May. Blackstone, formerly named Blacks and Whites, and then Bellefonte, is a town in Nottoway County, Virginia, Nottoway County in the U.S. state of Virginia. The population was 3,621 at the 2010 census.
