Geography The western part of the locality is the valley of the Little Mulgrave River and the eastern part of the locality is the valley of the Mulgrave River. The Gillies Range Road runs through the locality connecting Gordonvale and the lower localities in the Cairns Region with the Atherton Tableland. The developed areas are mainly around the rivers as the ground rises sharply into the Great Dividing Range. The developed land is used for farming, both cropping (including sugarcane) and grazing. There is a cane tramway through the locality to deliver the harvested sugarcane to the Mulgrave Sugar Mill. Mulgrave is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland. The district in its present form is a narrow coastal strip running from the southern suburbs of Cairns at its northern end to Innisfail at its southern end. Mulgrave also includes the towns of Gordonvale and Babinda. The electorate was first created for the 1950 election. There was an earlier district also called Mulgrave that existed from 1873 to 1888. Atherton Tableland
The Atherton Tableland is a fertile plateau which is part of the Great Dividing Range in Queensland, Australia. The principal river flowing across the plateau is the Barron River. It was dammed to form an irrigation reservoir named Lake Tinaroo. Tinaroo Hydro, a small 1.6 MW hydroelectric power station, is located near the spillway. Cairns-Mulgrave Tramway
The Cairns-Mulgrave Tramway was a private tram line from Cairns to the Mulgrave River in Queensland, Australia. It was built until 1897 to serve the Mulgrave Central Sugar Mill, built in 1895. The line, which led through difficult terrain including dense jungle, was built by the Cairns Divisional Board, later renamed Cairns Shire Council, at a cost of £15,319. Mulgrave Sugar Mill
The Mulgrave Sugar Mill is a sugar mill in Gordonvale, Cairns Region, Queensland, Australia. It commenced operations in 1896. It is operated by MSF Sugar, a subsidiary of the Mitr Phol Group. It is also known as Mulgrave Central Mill. History Richard Blackwell was a pioneer settler in the Gordonvale area. On 18 October 1879, took up land in the Mulgrave River area known as Plain Camp, near where Gordonvale is now located. He reportedly made a gift of part of this land for the establishment of the Mulgrave Sugar Mill. The Sugar Works Guarantee Act of 1893 provided for the erection of approved Central Mills on a government loan if farmers mortgaged their land as security.
